Should Brunty have taken the Penalty?
« on: August 24, 2015, 06:42:19 AM »
Only noticed it on match of the day last night but Brunty tried to take the ball off Morrison as he was walking to place the ball on the spot and Mozza shoved him away.
On reflection Brunty was probably a better option.
If Berahino had been on the pitch then he would have taken it but did we miss a basic here by not appointing a back up penalty taker before the start of the game.

Think by how Morrison was quick to go get the ball and adamant he wanted it, you probably would have let him have it as he was confident in his own ability to put the ball in the net.

That being said, there should have been a nominated player (picked beforehand) who takes the penalties should Saido (and Lambert) not be on the pitch, which im guessing would have been Brunt.

They said in the Sky commentary that Brunt has missed 2 out of his last 5 penalties. Berahino would probably have taken it had he been on the pitch, but the best penalty taker in our squad now is Lambert of course.

What if he doesnt want to take pens?

Not every player is comfortable taking them.

I think if it was 5 games down the line he probably would have taken it. I can see why he didn't yesterday.

Despite feeling that there should be no objections to Morrison taking the penalty if he was adamant he was having it and confident enough to do so, I do feel that this type of matter is better discussed and sorted sorted pre match. Whenever you see two players on the pitch having some sort of debate/argument over who's taking the penalty, you find the penalty is more often than not missed.

To be fair, Brunt didn't exactly try very hard to get the ball, to me it looked like:

CB: Oi Mozza, I'm having this
JM: Don't be daft, I'm smashing this one in
CB: I used to be pen taker
JM: Yeah but there's a reason you're not any more
CB: ...

Ok, maybe a bit of creative licence there, but the general point still stands :P

This shouldn´t be an issue at all. Pulis should have decided before the game, who should take the penalty.

Rondon no es tirador de penalty en ninguno de sus equipos, ni de tiros libres, sin embargo ayer disparó un tiro libre, me pareció extraño, si es así el debió lanzar el penalty, mas si no hay ningún especialista en el equipo.

Rondon is no penalty shooter in any of its equipment or free throw, but yesterday he shot a free throw, I found it strange, if so, he must throw the penalty, but if there is no specialist equipment.

Interesting post there JoseVen! I gather what you're saying is that Rondon isn't known for taking penalties or free kicks but as he was taking our free kicks yesterday then there is no reason why he shouldn't be taking the penalties also.

Era su primer partido y quiza respetó el liderazgo de otros jugadores en el equipo. Eso pense. Pero luego tomo la responsabilidad en un tiro libre... Ahi me dije, porque no tomaste el penalty?

It was his first game and perhaps other leadership respected players on the team. I thought so. But then I take responsibility in a free kick ... There I said, because you did not take the penalty?

Tal vez fue porque ganó el tiro libre, pero él no ganó la pena?

Maybe it was because he won the free-kick, but he didn't win the penalty?

Yes but Jimmy was unlucky as it hit the keepers foot more than a great save.

I guess Saido is No. 1 taker. Lambert would be No.2 - maybe no-one had noticed that neither would be on the pitch.

Both Morrison and Brunt have very poor penalty taking records. I feel Mclean or Mcmanaman would have been better options personally?

Yes but Jimmy was unlucky as it hit the keepers foot more than a great save.

Hitting it hard down the middle and hoping the other guy gets out of the way isn't unlucky, it's moronic. It was a horrible penalty, as is every other Penalty of it's like ever taken.

For a top level player, I'd expect 19/20 to be scored. Smashed hard, high and within 1ft of the crossbar, preferably hitting the inside netting.
Whenever things look bad, remember the Port Vale, Grimsby and Walsall days... not so bad now, eh?!

Does it add pressure when suddenly you're having your name sung just before you take the penalty ?

Anyone think it's interesting that JM shone somewhat when Saido wasn't on the team?

Didn't Dawson have a decent record for England Under 21's from the spot? He was the first choice taker wasn't he?

To be fair to Mozza the theory behind the placement of the penalty (centre and hard) was right as the keeper will always dive (I'm a keeper myself with a very good penalty saving record), Mozza  just didn't get enough height on it to miss Courtoius' trailing  leg.

Crucial turning point though I will agree.

Also, and this is beside the point, I'm sure that penalty miss made him play even better.
