Zoltan Gera
« on: March 19, 2022, 03:13:16 AM »
Hello Baggies! I'm writing an article on Zoltan Gera's time in England and would love to get some input from the fans at WBA. Is Gera a player that is still remembered? What are your feelings about him when he played for West Brom? I want my article to be more about the man and not just a footballer. Please give me anything that comes into your mind. Thank you so much in advance!

Universally loved by the fans, a player with great quality and also determination. Also loved because he played with a smile on his face and he never shirked hard work.

'That' goal against Liverpool in the 3-0 win at the Shrine. The TV angle from behind the goal is pretty much my view. The camera gantry was one row behind. Absolutely superb technique to bring the ball under control and volley it in. What a day, what a goal, what a game and what a player  8) .

Zoltan Gera, a Baggies Hero, recruited by another Baggies Hero, Gary Megson and was probably his best signings for us.

Zoltan will always be a Baggy and will always be remembered by Baggies fans and he is always in our hearts.

COYB!!!!

It would be great, when you've finished your article, if you could post here for all forum members to read about the great man. Thank you in advance

One of the best bits of skill I've ever seen in any game when he kept the ball in out of nowhere, won us a corner and we scored from it against the Leaky Blinders.  It kickstarted a run of form that saw us stay up.

Legs like matchsicks but an heart of a Lion. Just the type of player we've needed this season,  wonder if our recruitment office know that he's retired, at 42 and available on a free they're probably still monitoring him.😀

Everything you want from a midfielder. Creative, explosive change of pace, always a potential goalscorer. I remember how he could put a player through on goal with one clever, first time pass.
One of my all time favourite players, even when he was playing for Fulham!

This is ultimately what I remember of Gera. The Liverpool goal a few years later was great, but this incredible bit of heart and skill is one of the best things I've ever seen live. I was sat in the woodman corner that day and got to see it in all it's glory. The moment you started to believe the great escape was on.

As I was a kid when he first came to the Albion, he was probably my fave player ever. The fact my display pic on this site is of him tells it all.
Absolute legend.

I just wish this current team had 10% of the ability, courage, likeability and determination that Zoltan did.

The article will be in Hungarian but I'l try and make a rough translation once it's finished.

Thank you everyone for your replies and kind words about Gera. I don't know if you are aware of this, but he was offered a coaching position for the youth team when his contract expired at WBA. He declined because he was still ready to play and he was rewarded by getting to Euro 2016 and scored a screamer against Portugal. A similar goal to the one against Pool but hit the bottom right corner instead the top left. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjWObjk6iUc

Taitshi, Gera remains one of my all time favourite players.

Everyone has to move on some time but I was really sad to see Zoltan leave.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. Mods, please feel free to move if appropriate.

Just read of an evening with Zoltan at Whitnash Sports and Social Club, Leamington Spa on 1st Feb organised by Warwick Baggies.

I would think many baggies would like to attend as Zoltan was and remains a legend for many of us including me. Unfortunately, too far away for me to attend.

I met him in a restaurant later that day by sheer chance. Spoke to him and got a photo with him, very down to earth bloke. He is my favourite ever Albion player alongside Mulumbu and Koumas.

The Beckham of the Buda!

I loved his backflipping goal celebration and how he would shout at players to move out the way before he did it!

So many genius football moments from him, so athletic.

His overhead kick cross in the away win at Charlton was sublime and how he kept the ball in play with the flying slide against Birmingham was insane!!

Loved Zoltan! He was the man!
