Is this TP way of saying we need more players?. Its a good job other results went our way! Playing Lescott at LB and perserving with Andre Wisdom Wisdom is going to get us nowhere.
I agree with this - felt very much like a statement to the chairman with 11pm Monday looming...

FA Cup all day long for me too.
"6 times winners of the trophy, West Bromwich Albion..." just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it!

General Football & Sports / Re: Alan Irvine sacked by Albion
« on: June 14, 2014, 10:48:16 PM »
I live in Cheshire now and my 6 year old lad loves footy, but doesn't 'support' anyone yet.  Naturally I've bought him albion shirts and taken him to a couple of games (Wigan 2-3, Fulham 1-1 and a pre-season friendly) to try to subtlely persuade him to pledge his allegiances to us. Naturally round here his mates follow the big clubs and he's leaned more towards City because of this, but he always talks of 'we', 'us' and 'the Albion' when we chat about our matches.

Tonight it broke my heart to tell him not to bother supporting us. Our club is a shambles, and in an era when money now dominates the game, I find it sickeningly ironic our chairman persists in showing a permanent lack of ambition, or indeed class.

I feel for Irvine because he will face the ire of fans when he should not be in this position. There are better candidates out there - but they will cost money (high wages/compensation) to bring in but Mr Peace will hide behind his minions within their various departments who spout propaganda and spin while his 'customers' have to put up with this farce.

I hope I'm wrong about Irvine, as I'm sure we all do, and we have a season to be proud of, but a coach who has not even been touted as a candidate to any job throughout the chopping and changing of all clubs over three years? Get real messers Burton and Peace.

If Fulham and Norwich loose next Saturday then neither can catch us
Given our far superior goal difference we can afford For both to draw and still be safe.  Villa on the other hand...  :D

Fantastic post , and one I wholeheartedly agree with. The worry for now is will Mel see out the season - I certainly hope so and, irrespective of whether it's Premier or Championship football in August, has a chance to impose his style and passion on a refreshed squad who are ready to embrace his ideas over the summer.

Steve Madeley ?@smadeley_star 5m

Malmo claim Markus Rosenberg has agreed a 3-year contract with them and will have a medical in Florida (pre-season camp) tomorrow. #wba

Steve Madeley ?@smadeley_star 5m

The statement doesn't specify details of the transfer, but does say Rosenberg has 'made sacrifices', suggesting a buy-out of #wba contract.

Steve Madeley ?@smadeley_star 1m

On reflection, maybe not a buy-out of contract. Possibly just waived the final 18 months for a lesser wage in Sweden. #wba

Completely misread the twitter timeline and initially thought we'd got 5million for Rosenberg! I know JP can drive a bargain but that WOULD be special!

Really pleased to see us pressing the opposition and trying to knock the ball around for a change.  The flip side of that is it seemed to take quite a while for us to be comfortable with the ball!  Thought Big Vic was a real handful when he came on, and Anelka did well but the big question for me at the minute is where are the goals going to come from?

Not a bad start for the Mel revolution though!

The ghost of Steve Clark's tactics still hang around this team like a bad smell, and the sooner Pepe Mel comes in to introduce a style that will energise these players the better.  Downing could've gone out on a high today with a bold, youthful attacking lineup: instead he reverts to type and reintroduces a team and tactic which are currently comparable to Stoke.

When we keep the ball on the floor (and with the correct players on the pitch) I think we actually look a good side.  But it's so frustrating watching a constant stream of hopeful punts up to a forward who no longer looks fit to wear the shirt.  As others have said we've gone backwards as a squad and I hope and pray Mel can get the momentum back, because if not we'll be right in the thick of it come April/May.

Always had a lot of time for Long, but today he changed that opinion for me.  He looked disinterested, and the quality simply isn't there for where we want to go as a team.  Mel used to be a striker so I suppose he has better judgement than most as to what he wants from Long but if Bruce came in with £6Mil I'd snap his hand off.

Poor team selection, Brunt nowhere near a centre-midfielder, Mulumbu unable to do the simple things, Olsson constantly lumping it up to Long who can't do anything with it, Morrison lightweight, Sess out of position.
Sinclair - is he even playing?
Ridgwell surprisingly ok, Jones doing what he does - says it all that our only attacking threat is coming from fullbacks. Complete joke of a performance.

This lot are seriously lacking any confidence and Downing desperately needs to change something asap.

Can't stand Probert. Always seems to give the big club decisions.

I remember him again Spurs at home a couple of years ago where he gave them everything. Never forgiven him for that and nothing iv seen since has made me change my mind.
Ah, the irony now!

I was unsure about selling Wood, but I think that Dawson is a player who make it at this level. He still has a lot of time on his side. Dawson has had 97 leauge starts and has scored 23 goals.
Seriously?!  For a centre-half that's ridiculous, even if most of those came in lower league football!!!  :o

Apologies mods if this is in the wrong place but just wanted to highlight the program on Wednesday night for Laurie's story.
Already set the recorder for it!

Abject for the first 40, average for the last 5 of the first half and a Clarke rocket at half time got us out of a big hole with a much improved 2nd half... but it couldn't have got any worse.  You could see what it meant to Pete when he scored... if the twitching, used car salesman wide-boy from QPR was watching then 'Arry, you've just been priced out of signing him (hopefully!)
Defensively we looked shakey but very unlucky to lose Yacob so early.  Thought Dorrans did well after switching to centre mid, and Thomas gave us the width we've been crying out for. Defensively though we looked petrified of their pace and scared to commit to challenges.
Relieved!!!

Disappointed - really thought we could've given this one a good go this season.  Very poor up top tonight and our squad doesn't look as strong as I hoped it would.

Thought their youngsters look very good in patches - full credit to them.

Ah well, a good kick up the rear end ready for the Vile on Sunday...

Very pleased with the window.  Alot of the business at other clubs smacks of desperation - we on the other hand have appeared efficient, measured and very deliberate in what we've done.

It makes me chuckle when the likes of QPR are signing players left right and centre... what ever happened to managers improving players, rather than outright replacing what they have?  Slightly off topic I know but it gives me great reassurance that we have SC in charge - a coach who will improve on what is already a strong and competitive squad.

What is it about playing Wigan that turns our football into mush?  We just cannot perform when we play them.

I'm loathe to change a defence during any game but Shorey is a liability - swap him for Dawson and push Ridgewell out to left back.
I know Long hasn't played well but keep him on for another 15-20 if it remains 0-0, solely for match fitness.

Hope Roy's giving them a right b0ll0king.

That sums up playing the big boys away for me...

Long barely touches Evans near the corner flag and ref immediately gives a free kick.  No less contact than the odem penalty appeal.
Joke.

Where would we be if we had of played 4-5-1 all season? The players and the manager haven't changed, scary to think about what we could have achieved.

Another solid 45 minutes, keep it up Albion!
Couldn't agree more... just glad Uncle Roy has FINALLY seen the light!

Good half, and a good game in general.  Need to keep it tight at the back and not start to sit deeper than we need when they have spells of possession.

All playing well for me... more of the same second half please but with Olsson netting from a corner  :D

A truly abysmal display.  Come on Roy, what bull5hit have you got for it this week; Snow on the pitch? Too many players unaccustomed to the cold of a Black Country winter? Head sore from too much banging against the railings? Yes you can have a genuine gripe AGAIN about another penalty appeal going against us but that is it. It's not good enough.

As for the 14 who donned the blue n white just a couple of thoughts;
Mulumbu - just couldn't put a foot right and rightly subbed (but for the right player?)
McCauley - struggling lately.
Shorey - even the threat to his place hasn't upped his game.
Odemwingie - what's happened to the 15 goal man from last year?  Trying too hard or not enough?
Morrison - good form of late ebbing away.

Full credit to the fans who went and were put through that abject performance.
