West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Boaz Myhill

Jibes aside I hope he's OK. Mate of mine bloated up similar to Boaz years ago. He wasn't stuffing his face. It was a reaction to the steroid medication he was on as part of his treatment for colon cancer.

I'm pretty sure with Myhill it's food related. I remember hearing him on a podcast talking about how partial to a bacon sandwich he was during his playing days. I'm pretty sure he said he used to have 2 or 3 on a matchday.

Ended 3-0 to Leeds. Flattering score line, two late goals. Leeds back to the top.

1-0 to Leeds at half time.
Sheff Wed started looking dangerous after 30 mins but Leeds still having better chances and look the more likely to get the next goal.

Despite never hitting the heights of his loan season I thought he had a good season last year, trickled out a bit with injury. He’s not been good this season but sometimes I feel there are 1 or 2 that are looking for him to fail.

Ultimately he’s never hit his potential and it’s a shame but it seems the injury, injuries and some Tin Man syndrome have done him in.
I thought last season was his most productive from a goal involvement perspective?

“Fellows will create the odd chance”…what am I reading?!

Thought we did more than enough to win that game. Grady played well and I was surprised he was taken off. Styles good too. I think I’d like to see Style in midfield which would basically mean giving Frabotta a chance.

More full circle things now that all of his old teams and us are in a row.

Styles could play in midfield with a back 4 of Furlong   Bartley, Taylor and Heggem.

We created enough chances to have comfortably won that. Thought it was going to be one of those games against Stoke when we just couldn't score.
Holgate the weak link at the back but luckily Stoke didn't offer much and seemed happy that they'd scored one.
Diangana got better as the game wore on and took his goal well.
Plenty for Mowbray to work on.

Grant I would've thought
Yeah I would expect Diangana will play as a 10....unless we are going 2 up top?

Would've preferred Diakite to Mowatt.

I have reservations but he is definitely saying the right things.
I think we will need to be patient and I certainly don't expect to see the free flowing football we had last time...at least not for a while anyway.
If he can keep us defensively solid coupled with attacking flair then I'm sure we'll all be very happy.

It's gone 4pm
I would imagine the press conference was Brunt's pre match one and may only just have finished. I doubt if it was to say whether or not we have a new head coach / manager.

Fair enough, clearly a misunderstanding on my part.......

'One of the things that does give me hope is that he did a big squad rebuild in 07/08. He moved on the likes of Koumas, Kamara and Davies for decent money and brought in Brunt, Morrison, Teixeira, Bednar etc. He brought in some quality younger players to replace the quality going out. He will find himself in a similar position this time around, although he[/u] won't have as much money to spend but he doesn't have to move as many players on.

....... apologies, I didn't realise 'as part of a collaborative process' before 'he' was to be assumed by the reader  ;D .

That's okay. It's common knowledge that Nestor will have a part to play in player recruitment.

And he wasn't solely responsible for that either. Let's not forget that much talked about chap who went to the FA and the folliculary challenged one who could have negotiated his way through a closed vice  ;) .

Never said he was solely responsible for it.

Playing devil's advocate here but according to Transfermarkt four of those eight goals came via the penalty spot. I know they all count but that's a 50% reduction in his effectiveness in terms of goal output from open play as a centre forward. I didn't check to see how many assists he got as a centre forward as you didn't mention them. Interestingly all of his goals as a centre forward that season came under Steve Bruce.

He got 3 assists at CF and 4 at LW.

Good point about the penalties. Although 1 in 4 is still a decent return from someone who isn't a true CF.

Yeah and he played wide left.

Not entirely wide left though, as I posted above he played 15 times as the CF and scored 8 goals. (according to TransferMarkt). He played 28 as LW and scored 10..so he was actually more proficient when playing through the middle.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/karlan-grant/leistungsdaten/spieler/314183/plus/0?saison=2021

similarly with Huddersfield he played a mix of LW (26 games 11 goals) and CF (18 games 8 goals).

I think Grant is the best bet if we are going to go with 1 up top, the bigger issue is who plays either along side him (if we go 4-4-2) or just behind him as a 10.
If we have Fellows RW and Johnston LW then it'll be one of Cole, Swift, Wallace or Diangana....unless we move either Fellows or Johnston. Not a good problem to have.

Although I am quite reserved about Mowbray, mainly due to his health but also as others have said it rarely works out when a manager returns (and he really didn't seem to have the much lauded 'Plan B' when we were in the Premier league with him).
Since getting back into the Premier league is the eventual aim I'm concerned that he lacks experience of managing in the PL (he's only had the 1 season with us) but it has been 15 years since he left and he's a much more experienced manager.

One of the things that does give me hope is that he did a big squad rebuild in 07/08. He moved on the likes of Koumas, Kamara and Davies for decent money and brought in Brunt, Morrison, Teixeira, Bednar etc. He brought in some quality younger players to replace the quality going out. He will find himself in a similar position this time around, although he won't have as much money to spend but he doesn't have to move as many players on.

He's proved himself a capable manager at this level without getting the promotions (he's been unlucky on that front) but has improved the sides he's been in charge of.

For who?

Under Val he played wide left and for Huddersfield.

Fair enough, I was misremembering where he played.

He did play as a CF 15 times, scoring 8,  in 21/22 though but was predominantly at left wing (according to Transfer Markt).

He is awful as a lone striker, he cannot play the role, you're better off sticking Bartley there

Didn't he score around 18 goals as a lone striker?

We are 6th Maja being injured does NOT mean season over we finished 5th last year with no striker or did everyone forget?

We had Thomas - Asante as a striker.

Idrissa, Ranger and Crowther I have heard of. Idrissa is the Italian lad, remember him being the only player outside of Italy to make their youth national team for a cup tournament a year or so ago. Ranger is one we picked up from (I think) West Ham in the Summer and i've just heard of Crowther, got no fun fact for him

He's the lad spotted in the North East and brought to the club by Morrison. Seems to be quite well regarded and a box to box midfielder.

if the manager is to have no say in transfers then Mowbray is out of contention. Listen to his interview on YouTube. He clearly states that he believes there has to be collaboration between the director of football and the manager to be truly successful at our level. I don't believe Nestor has even played professional football which is another red flag for Mowbray.

Mowbray worked with Dan Ashworth and he hadn't played professional football only non league.

I think he came on for us in the League Cup so can't play for another team if he played any minutes for Walsall

Yeah he did come in at Fleetwood and he also got minutes at Walsall.
