Recent experience seems to indicate that money received for going up is not sufficient to compete.  You have to take a gamble like Forest, overspend and hope you stay up.  Alternatively, you get relegated, your best players leave or are poached and the rest are expensive hangovers.

I'm not sure the yo-yo ratchet works anymore.   Rebuilds have to be steady and over a number of seasons.
I think Forest's success is not so much about overspending, as finding the right manager. Sacking Cooper and appointing Espirito Santo seems to be working for them.

Was it you who was dismissing Wilder too on the championship thread not long ago

These managers know exactly what is needed in building promotion winning teams, a solid defence and two mf generals who fight tooth and nail for every ball and how to get results on a budget.

They've done the hard yards and know the English gane inside out.

I may not be neutral on the Wicky impending appointment but if his side show a fighting spirit that keeps us competitive with this limited squad I will be very happy and pleasantly surprised.
Yes. Wilder and Dyche are similar in many ways.  I agree they know all about building a solid defence and a fighting spirit. Its the creative side where they don't have much of a clue despite all their experience in the English game. I would also question whether they know what working within a budget is. Everton have a budget we could only dream about, and still they managed just 15 goals in 19 games under Dyche this season. And Sheff Utd brought on a £23million striker against us, who looked pretty hopeless whenever I've seen him.

As long as our normally reliable defence doesn't become like swiss cheese under him, we have a fighting chance.

Tamper with that and I will be praying for over 50 points asap.

Those who turned their noses up to the likes of Dyche may soon discover the saying defences win titles.
If Dyche had been in charge today, we'd have scored nil. Which is actually what his Everton side managed just a couple of weeks ago v Bournemouth.

4
The other thing is, who was supposed to be holding the ball up front today? i.e. to enable the ball to be played forward centrally, and to knock in any crosses arriving in the box? We didn't have Maja, but nobody seemed to replace him.

5
The weak midfield really didn't do us any favours. What a difference Diakite and Molumby made when they came on.
Don't think we deserved to lose by that score line and the goal straight after half time killed the game.
Wildsmith, Holgate, Swift, Diangana and Racic all very poor.
Can't blame selection on Brunt, it was a reasonably strong side. We just have far too many fancy Dans that couldn't tackle a fish supper.
It is more the defence which cost us, as they were able to lose our defenders and Wildsmith could have done better.  And even with Molumby and Diakite on, we never looked any more likely to score.

6
Wildsmith touched the ball to him.  Doesn't that play him onside or am I out of date?
I think you're right. So goes down as a Wildsmith mistake.

As a positive today, he looks difficult to shake off the ball, and just as important, he sees and delivers a through pass. Just a bit slow. I'd like him even more, if he got rid of those earrings.

I think the big takeaway from this is that realistically, we're nowhere near good enough for the top level and now it's pretty clear.

One thing I would add is that it's also eye opening as to how cut throat PL teams are in front of goal. Two goals either side of half time absolutely destroyed us. You don't really see that level of clinical striking at our level.
Agreed. Bournemouth also showed how you break at pace from defence into attack. That's what cut us open, whilst our defending didn't help. Holgate poor at CB, Taylor has a mistake in him, and thank goodness we have Palmer and not Wildsmith as our regular keeper.
Thought their first goal looked offside though.

9
If we can secure £10 million for Fellows I’d snap their hands off.
Thats what I call the spiralling down effect. Selling our better and buying progressively poorer players.

10
He is nothing but consistent.
Think Swift one of our better players. Linking the play going forward.

11
First Bournemouth goal looked a bit offside to me. The second easily preventable by Holgate and Wildsmith could have done better. Didn't see the 3rd.

I very much welcome Palmer signing a new contract, and not so that we can enhance his transfer value. We need to be planning for the future and having a safe pair of hands at the back to build around, is crucial to that. Also, its good having a few local players in the team.

I'm not sure that anyone has said that prospective head coaches "have no desire to manage this great club".

I believe we did approach Tony Mowbray for talks, but TM declined for health reasons, Lee Carsley was alleged to have said he was not ready for Club Football yet &, I belive it was Russel Martin who said he didn't want to work in a continental style model.

In my opinion, a number of prospective head coaches with English backgrounds would find it difficult to operate in a Nestor/Continental model.
It appears that Nestor has found a coach with continental experience who he considers would be capable of delivering his vision. To be fair, Wicky, as an experienced continental coach, has a far better chance of success than trying to shoe horn a reluctant coach with an English background.
Good Post.
We could indeed have gone for 'a reliable safe pair of hands' with lots of experience in English football, but we've been down that route many times, and usually we've come unstuck. That would include Mowbray, even though we played some good football under him, its now time to move on. By the way, I would put Corberan firmly in the modernising camp, even though he had some prior English experience.

Luckily, we now have a forward thinking owner and executive who are planning medium and long term, rather than just day to day survival. For me, its about having modern training methods, being good at coaching players to be better, analytical about tactics, and inspirational. (though I accept old school managers can also be inspirational). I am hopeful Wicky ticks a lot of those boxes, and am intrigued to learn more about him (if it is indeed him).

Watching Wycombe- Portsmouth 2-0 at HT. Despite Portsmouth possession, Wycombe much more efficient in front of goal. Will be disappointed if we don't thump this  Portsmouth outfit in a few weeks time.
Wycombe-Portsmouth 2-0 FT. Portsmouth fans reduced to singing 'we've had a shot' towards the end.

Given his previous time at Everton, Heitinga might be re-thinking his commitment to Liverpool.

Interesting Percy says the 3 are Wicky, Heitinga and Hake. Maybe Heitinga not so out of the race as previously thought.
Still hoping its Heitinga, but I could live with Wicky. He seems passionate, judging from the short clip, and I hope he has an attacking mindset and his tactical analysis is good. Believe me, far far worse names have been mentioned on this forum.

It's probably completely unfair but to me there's something Pardewish about him, hope I'm wrong if it is him.
I'd be fully confident he'd be trying to get us playing attractive attacking football, and that he'd be a hands-on coaching trainer. The question is, would he have the personality to get through to the players. I've never heard him speak, in Dutch or English.

I think a priority for the owners is that the new man must be willing and able to work within a tight budget. I can imagine a lot of managers would come in saying, they'll get us promotion if they are allowed to spend for players on their shopping list, but that ain't going to happen. Corberan was ideal in that respect, because he never moaned about our tight budget situation. The owners will want a hands-on training ground bloke who will coach our existing squad (give or take a few around the edges), improve them, and form them into a team capable of promotion. Wicky, Hake and Fischer probably fit that description.

Those not wanting Dyche can relax. He wouldn’t entertain a job with us as things stand.
Pity Everton couldn't have held off sacking him for a couple more weeks and so save us a couple of pages on him here.

Sean Dyche spotted boarding a number 74 bus at New Street Station heading for The Hawthorns.
😜
That would be the cue for me to take up a new more exciting hobby. Watching cement dry might be entertaining.

Still a bit disappointed Heitinga seems out of the frame. Both him and Hake grew up with Dutch football, and they will have the same general outlook about playing attacking football, tactics, and on coaching better technical skills into players. However, Heitinga came through the Ajax academy and youth system, which is regarded as the blueprint, whereas Hake came through smaller clubs. He is also older than Heitinga, whereas Heitinga has already managed Ajax first team for half a season, and lost just 4 games.

If it is Hake, he needs to get his messages through to the players. I honestly have no idea how good he is at that, but from what I've read, Heitinga is pretty good, and Slot defintely seems to think so. On the other hand, we only want a manager who is fully committed, and if Heitinga would rather be at Liverpool, we have to accept that.

I think Lopetegul seriously under-achieved with that squad. Kudus, is to my mind, one of the most creative players in the PL,  Alvarez one of the best defensive midfielders, Fullkrug absolutely clinical in front of goal, Bowen, Antonio, the Czech guys. Yes, he may have had some bad luck with injuries, but that's why he has a squad. I can see Potter bringing them up into the top 8 at the minimum.

I think all 3 of those named would be considered left field to start with to be fair.
What does "left field" even mean?
