did you know ? thread
« on: October 23, 2023, 02:04:07 PM »
I thought I would start this off with

Did you know?
That in the WBA v Wolves head to head, we are currently +12 wins more than the knuckle draggers which is the largest margin EVER !!, they have been in deficit since 1910-11 season,

In other words we have had the ascendancy over them for 112 years !!

Yep knew this a few years ago when we were about 6 wins up. Bet a dingle we had won more. Had a few pics of him kissing my Albion tattoo.

Sticking on the attendance front, our average attendance in our division 3 campaign in 1991-92, averaged only 2 thousand less than top flight Chelsea. Would probably have been even were it not for bumper crowds vs Liverpool and Arsenal.

Sticking with attendances, did you know the last 30 thousand gate at the Hawthorns is 31,186 v Everton FA Cup round 3, January 1989. 34 years! Absolutely unbelievable for a club of our size.

All comes down to lack of ambition, lack of investment, lack of foresight, lack of finance. All of which we've really had none of in 40 years.

Not that unbelievable given the laws around seating reducing the capacity. We physically couldnt get more in. Could we have extended the Halfords? maybe but for minimal benefit given the costs involved.

Could be wrong but I think that's the new stadium which hasn't been completed yet, that said it was a bit of an uphill hike to their ground during pre season so you never know  ;D .

Did you know that?
During West Broms historic tour of the Republic of China in 1979, upon visiting the Great Wall, John Trewick did little for Anglo-Sino relations by saying

I hope Forest Green get relegated this season. I cant stand their owner.
It is not the taking part, but the winning that counts.

Dennis Clarke became the first substitute used in an F A Cup Final when he replaced the injured John Kaye
(1968). Of course only 1 sub allowed in those days...............what would CC do if he could only have a single nominated sub.?

I've only speed read the opening paragraphs but the attached article is about John Wile and looks an interesting read. Apologies for not copying and pasting the article but I'm pushed for time and the formatting doesn't look overly copy and paste friendly.

Thanks for that, a good read, I was at both of those semi-finals sad days for different reasons, the one at highbury against QPR was a travesty !

St Margarets hospital in great barr was bought by the West Bromwich Guardians of the Poor
After the death of Lady Bateman-Scott in 1909 and used as Great Barr Park Idiot Colony.

less PC times clearly

meanwhile at the Hallam hospital, "In the 1950s Hallam Hospital made its first radio broadcast when the husbands of the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service provided a football commentary service to patients, live from nearby West Bromwich Albion"

1950's women could broadcast live, but the club still struggle 70plus years on !

Listened to a podcast he did with Andy Burnham, Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell where he talked about football. As Oldbury says, he is a proud Villa fan, but I get the impression he would love to see all of the regions sides do well as it would boost local pride and also be a financial boost to the region.
