Albion Matchday Forum / Re: After Match Debate

Reading through the in-match thread and the over-reaction of quite a few as we struggled in a dire first half is very entertaining. Lots of posts about the sky falling in, Palmer needing to be dropped, subs galore required etc. All very panicky. We never got going until the second half but had enough about us to keep Huddersfield to just the one goal. Then as they tired our quality and momentum was too much for them. Okay scored a belter but was a bit sloppy in general play. Palmer redeemed himself. Bartley was excellent throughout. Johnston usual dangerous self. Weimann made the first goal. Excellent week again. Backed up the important Coventry win with 4/6 points from two away games. Everything is going great, we just need to manage the squad and injuries during the run-in.
I thought Bartley was the pick of our back 4 today even if playing from the back isn’t to his strengths
We need to adapt in game sometimes especially away from home when teams are pressing high first half and play over it
Even if we don’t retain the ball it gives them less encouragement to press if we sometimes go over it
The fact my highlighting Palmers more continual bloopers seems to get mentioned most weeks surely highlights how more consistent they are happening
He made a couple of good saves after that but that is what he is there for to make saves
I still stand by my opinion he is no more than an average championship goalkeeper and I believe given the same confidence and run of games Griffiths would be the better option

I’d love Sorba Thomas. Such a quality player at this level. Would also take a punt on Burgzorg in the summer if they go down, apparently they have an option at £1m.
Rudoni is also a decent player
He bossed the midfield in the reverse fixture at the hawthorns

Great double save. Pieters ball watching

And another from Johnstone
Good ball from Grady
That rocket at half time was deserved and has done the trick
If we play on the front foot we are good
But we have to accept sometimes away from home in the first 45 minutes we have to match teams who are battling to stay ups work rate

What a strike yokuslu
Please don’t take him off

Better. If we match teams work rate our quality should shine through
Good save palmer, still looks nervous with the ball at his feet

We just cannot play like this away from home, it doesn't work, I don't care if we come back and win this, you have to smash it long sometimes, as we found out under Big Dave, if you are doing this every single time it just doesn't work.
This is down to CC
Sometimes you have to change
Especially away from home
Stick an extra midfielder in to get a foothold in the game first
Other than Johnstone our front 4 are anonymous
On a side note how many more errors before Griffiths gets a chance.?

The goal stemmed from palmer not putting his foot through it
We lost it again then a really poor attempt to save it from Palmer again
We limit the shots he has to face really well but he has been poor and error prone all season and needs replacing
We need an extra man in midfield just like at QPR
Sometimes the 4 pacy attackers needs binning especially away from home against teams battling to stay up
Really poor last game and so far today

Dreadful from palmer again
There’s times it’s just got to go
And that leads to another mistake from palmer
He needs taking out of the team his confidence looks shot

Without a focal point teams are getting wise to us by closing us down quickly
We need to move the ball quicker
We haven’t played through them once yet in 25 minutes

Sluggish start. High line with closing down not quick enough is a dangerous combination
Only poor choices by them saved us a couple of times

Some of the comments about Furlong and Townsend (not to mention Palmer) are hard to fathom. We have the third best defence in the division (by a distance) in terms of goals conceded, yet apparently we have 2 full backs who are dreadful footballers and a goalkeeper who is error prone and whose kicking is terrible. Something isn't adding up and that's putting it as politely as I can.
It’s all about opinions I personally don’t rate Palmer has highly has most but he his an average championship goalkeeper who is at his peak whilst I think in Griffiths we have a goalkeeper who could given chance exceed Palmers peak but at the moment Palmer is doing ok all be it drops the odd blooper which always seems to cost us unluckily
Regarding our full backs both have strengths and weaknesses and has someone else said a well coached defence can exceed individual talent but those weaknesses do surface on occasion
Furlong has improved his positional awareness under CC and is a decent athlete with an aerial presence
Townsend covers the left flank well and has a decent delivery but gets caught out of position too often
Would I like better hell yes
Do I criticise them when there weaknesses surface yes
But I will also give praise where due and I think other areas of the team are in need of refreshing in the short term

My opinion not good enough.
Very similar in weaknesses to Johnstone
Doesn’t command his box
Gets beaten by shots too easily seems very slow to move his feet
Furlong saved him tonight
I can’t recall him making a save of note tonight from open play which is staggering how much pressure they put us under and how poorly reach and Pieters were and most of the team has a whole

That was the best display against us all season bar maybe Southampton
QPR will feel hard done by but when I saw reach starting next to Pieters I feared the worst but they were not alone in playing poorly
It started from the back Palmer was like a cat caught in the headlights
I still maintain my stance he isn’t good enough, doesn’t command his box and gets beaten too easily by shots but is composed on the ball
Mowatt and yokuslu were constantly hassled in possession and has we have no one to hold the ball up lost possession every time we went long
It’s definitely a point gained hopefully CC now sees the blatantly obvious that Reqch is awful especially at left back
I thought Pipa did ok when he came on

I’m glad I’m at work getting paid to watch this an awful performance
Palmer poor again
Pieters and Reach well what I expected
Midfield two really poor in possession and pass choices
Front 4 can’t retain the ball Wallace especially poor again
Yet we lead 2-1
QPR by far the better team, surely we can’t play has poorly second half

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: John Swift
« on: March 02, 2024, 09:11:33 AM »
Swift is the one player for me who can see and execute a game changing pass. He also retains the ball very well and gets his fair share of goals
Ideal position is a number 10 behind a natural centre forward but without that option we have gone with a more pacy fluid front line, it will be nice when we have both options
He benefits from a run of games which his few niggly injuries have prevented
I would definitely keep him for next season after that we will see

Cov had nothing to lose and made it an end to end game
Our 4 forwards were guilty of losing possession too easily all night but for the first hour mowatt and yokuslu bossed it
I’d have bought swift and chalobah on at the 60 minute mark to bulk out the midfield and slow the game down and get more control
Johnston the pick of our front 4 and mowatt/yokuslu bossed it for an hour
Apart from the penalty kipre was very good again
Tough run over and still fifth which I thought would put us in a strong position if we were

Cov made it an end to end game with nothing to lose and we made the wrong subs at the wrong times in my opinion

End to end game doesn’t suit us.
I’d get another midfielder on

Our 4 wingers guilty of getting knocked off the ball to easily in bad positions so far
Cov pressing higher

Furlong gets a yellow and he's suspended for the next 2 games too
Didn’t know that. Let’s get a third and get him off

Albion Matchday Forum / Re: In Game Chat

In some ways that's not a bad thing.

Townsend on a yellow. Maybe he will take him off and move Pieters over or get Pipa on
I’d worry more if furlong was on a booking
O hare is more of a clever player than a tricky winger
Cov have already looked to press both of our full backs when they have the ball knowing they ain’t the best
If you notice they tend to leave kipre alone when he has it has he is comfortable with the ball at his feet
Mowatt and yokuslu playing well again
