Never mind 40 points, how about 40 goals!
« on: September 06, 2016, 09:40:29 AM »
Everyone talks about the magical 40 points, well how about we aim for 40 goals?

We managed only 34 last year which, apart from the sadsacks down the road, was the lowest in the league by some distance, so, given the current squad, how do we go about reaching 40?

Here's what I reckon we can need:

Rondon - 10
Chadli - 5
Berahino - 5
Robson - Kanu - 4
Phillips - 4
McAuley - 3
Dawson - 3
Gardner - 2
Evans - 1
Ollsson - 1
McLean - 1
Fletcher - 1

Sounds simple when you break it down doesn't it, but that would be 6 more than last year!

40 points is achievable grinding the opposition into submission, and a few set pieces.

40 goals your in dream land we set up for nil nil so 1 goal wins a game a realistic target is 35.

We will get 40+ goals this year.

Only because Pulis won't get past Christmas and the new boss HAS to be more attack minded?!
Whenever things look bad, remember the Port Vale, Grimsby and Walsall days... not so bad now, eh?!

40 goals?  How about 40 shots on target?

I haven't seen the stats from last year but I reckon you could count on one hand the number of times we scored more than one goal in a game plus how many games we won a game by more than one goal.

They'll be spread across the team.  I think Rondon will be even better this year, especially with Chadli and Phillips in the side as well as Brunt and Morrison returning eventually.  RK is not going to be worse than Anichibi and Lambert, Berahino will have to try a bit now he knows he'll be gone soon.

Just checked, we didnt win a game by more than 1 goal for the whole of last season.
We scored more than 1 goal in 9 games last year, with only 1 of those games that we had scored 3 or more.

We will get 40+ goals this year.
as far as I can see, Pulis' Stoke only got more than 40 once (46) in the Premier League in the 2010/11 season. Kenwyne Jones top scorer with 9 and Huth and Walters getting 6 each.

It's a fairly long shot, with them usually being around a goal a game (33-36)

Fair point, but I think we're definitely 6 goals better than last year.

That is probably the most disheartening stat I have read for a long, long time.
The thought that we will most likely score less than a goal a game is incredibly sad and probably explains a lot of the "negativity". Not a lot of Boing Boinging going on.   :'(

so to put this in context, Rondon is the most prolific striker Pulis has managed in the premier league,

He has managed some BIG name strikers, Crouch - Fuller - Walters - Owen- Kenwyne Jones - maybe the lad isn't as 5hit as some of our fans think

It would  be miracle if we score 40 goals in 38 games with Pulis in charge given his league record since taking over!

Played 59
Won 18
Drew 19
Lost 22
Scored 55
Against 72

The only impressive stat is the 23 Clean Sheets although I suppose if you sit on the 18 yard box for the entire game and don't leave space in behind, this helps!

Just for the record, in the 59 games our joint top scorers with only 10 goals are Berahino and Rondon! Who'd be a striker in a TP team!

Can anyone blame Berahino for wanting away this time last year?

The personnel give us a better chance of scoring 40 goals this year. Chadli has goals in him, more so than McLean, Sess, Macca. Phillips has more shooting ability than any of those 3 also. Our formation will determine how much game time and goals Berahino and HRK might get.

I live in hope that with Chadli's addition we can be more positive......getting back to the more positive play we saw against Stoke, Spurs and Palace at home last year 39 shots, 14 on target in total in those games. Let's see more games like those please.

73 points over 59 matches = 1.24 points per match

Over a 38 match season = 47 points a season

Win ratio season 1 = 21 games/8 wins = 38% - pretty impressive
Win ratio season 2 = 38 games/10 wins = 26% - not so good
Win ration season 3 = 3 games/ 1 win = 33%  - not enough games for an opinion

Appears to be a negative trend

Not sure that's too impressive with a wage bill allegedly somewhere between £55 & £70 million.

Not sure you can say it's a trend when you only have 2 data points.

47 points would have us finishing around 11th.

This thread isn't about points though. We all know Pulis can accumulate points.
This was about who will get the goals to allow him to do so.

The quote said the only impressive thing was the clean sheets which this is also not about  ;)

I think we'll hit 40 goals. Chadli linking midfield to attack with quality will make all the difference. Rondon will be vastly improved and instead of Vic and Rick we've a hungry Wales international who won't want to lose his place in that set up.

Fair enough and yes, we have to assume that we can improve on the goalscoring prowess of Sess, Vic and Rick. If not we may as well wave the white flag!

I think what we have added will see us conceed around 5-6 less, and maybe score 5-6 more.

In the goal difference column that would be pretty great.

Problem may start if Evans or Rondon + other key players suffer injuries.

We will see.
