Do you know which block of the East Stand the tickets are located?

My mistake 74.

When I initially replied to your post there were approximately 85 tickets remaining on general sale for the Leicester game.

I thought that you were getting mixed up with that one, when in reality it was I who was getting mixed up, as you were referring to the £8 offer in place for this specific game.

Both have had a reasonable degree of time in the first team.  Interestingly Dorrans on the whole appears to be doing slightly better which is surprising.  This will be an interesting match to watch, Norwich have strength in most areas of the pitch, but struggle to score.  They are desperate for a win, but at time when we are really starting to get it together.  I will go 2-1 to us... just as well as given my location the mickey taking will be awful if we loose.

They are on such a bad run, that once we get one the flood gates could open, i suspect Rondon could run riot against Bassong !

Dorrans has made 21 appearances in all competitions, 7 coming from the substitutes bench, he has picked up 3 yellow cards, made 1 assist but hasn't registered a goal.

Mulumbu has made just 8 appearances, 2 as a substitute, picking up 2 yellow cards failing to contribute either a goal or an assist.

For a team doing so badly Mulumbu especially should be featuring whenever he is fit.

He's not the player he was a few seasons ago that's for sure.

Norwich will be desperate for something here, I'd like to think though with the form we're in that we will have too much for them. Be nice to enter the top ten with a win here.

The thing is with Mulumbu, he seems to have gotten older with age when he should have reached his peak by now (I think he's 28 years old).

In his first Premier League season under Di Matteo he was genuinely class, 7 goals and loads of great defensive performances with high energy. The next few seasons weren't as good, but mostly because it would have been hard to match such quality. Then after a few more seasons he became very average and wasn't on cheap wages either.

It's a shame, it's almost like his style of play has lead him to burn out earlier as a player. You could never question his desire but he seems to unfortunately be one of those players who declines earlier than most, because there's no way Dorrans should be ahead of him.

Hopefully Evans will be fully fit for this and back alongside McAuley.

I think I would start Morrison on the bench (if he is fit) and look to give him maybe 20 mins if we are ahead and comfortable.

i asked Morrison before the Man Utd match when he would be back - he thought 3 weeks but that may not be match fit, I would expect to see him in the bench for Sunderland away :(

I really hope not. Evans should play where he is most effective and that's in the middle. Chester had a great game at left back against United (and was also good at right back) and I see no reason to change it especially after the way he has performed since coming into the side against Everton. If Dawson is injured I'd play Chester at right back and Pocognoli at left back with Evans in the middle with McAuley. Olsson dropped to the bench.

I wouldn't have Poco near the team, but I would also prefer Evans to displace Olsson, I just don't think he will.

I thought Poco did okay against Utd ...he has been poor in the cup games though. He stuck to his job well and put in a good cross for Rondon's goal, but more importantly for me he remained calm with a good cushioned header back to Foster right at the death rather than just a wild hoof back up the pitch. Personally I hope Dawson is fit and Chester starts at left back but I wouldn't mind Poco starting there if Chester is at right back.

So you wouldn't have a player anywhere near the team. who if he hadn't been on the pitch against Man Ure we wouldn't have got the 3 points, because I can tell you now we'd have been waiting months for Chester to put a cross of any real note in.

A bit unfair on Chester I think. Perhaps his role is not as an overlapping fullback, more to give the ball to the wide midfielder and let them do the forward play? I don't know. I did notice that against Man Utd Chester was always the last defender at corners and other set pieces...so maybe he'd been asked to stay defensive?

Quite likely given he is the only one at the back with any pace and youngest so likely best stamina

Surely with our current form of 10 from 12 & Rondon on fire we should be able to further preserve our PL status and bank the 3 points. Admittedly we are due a Home slip up ( again!) and Norwich rode their luck to gain a hard earned point against City so a draw may seem like a reasonable shout.

Having said all that I'm going for 2-0 Albion  ;)

It's a bit of a strange one, Current form suggests we will win a close game.Norwich will he hard to break down but ultimately we will do that.

I've seen us lose to Norwich far too many times recently though both home and away!

In a way this game reminds me of the Burnley game last season, when they were playing quite well but not getting any luck and losing most weeks.

IF we turn up and play to our strengths then I can see us winning by 3 or maybe more.

They take the lead, but the nerves get the better of them. Saido and Rondon to score.

To be fair to him he was okay for us at Chelsea, didn't fall for Costa's antics. Agree about the performance against Leicester though...very very poor.

Norwich seem to do quite well at The Shrine, won the last 3 here...I think score draw

They haven't mate, we beat them 2-1 in December 2012 when Snodgrass scored from a free kick for them but Gera and Lukaku scored for us. They have won 3 of the last 4 here though!

Since the start of the premier league we've played them 9 times 4 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw.

Tickets are to be collected from the WBA Sports Hall, Halfords Lane, West Bromwich.

We were pathetic, playing hoofball again against a team with 10 men behind the ball. If Sess had scored we'd have won that. Heartless garbage performance and the only saving grace is it's put Villa 12 points from safety now and we can't be accused of saving them later on.

Always going to happen. A very lucky goal and our fragile midfield unable to put anything forward for Rondon or Saido except lumped balls into a box filled with big strong defenders.  Sess back to not being able to beat an egg and he never was much of a goal threat. Says so much about our ability to create that Jacob not only the defensive cover but also the best passer today. Jonas not good at getting the ball to a team mate but has been a giant in defence so many times so get off his back. Fletcher not always brilliant going forward and has been a bit inconsistent but to suggest not have him in or around the team is a ridiculous knee jerk to a poor game for us. Pulis not to blame for poor passing and slow thought, but no doubt we would all have done things differently regarding tem selection, especially with Fletcher and the full back position. Itin the words of the song "It don't really matter anyhow".

We're a very poor side that imo Pulis is working wonders with and when 5 or 6 of them don't do the basics right we look very poor. Fletcher Sessegnon Olsson Dawson and Gardner were dreadful. Berahino anonymous. Just have to accept it and move on.

disagree that we will or can only improve if the clubs sold, you've named at least 5 players in an earlier post that could be improved upon thus improving the team. one things for sure , we cannot keep buying players that are a complete waste of our resources. I think today showed how reliant we are on Fletcher and Sessegnon at times. We constantly tried the long ball and it just didn't work - Klose mopped everything up yet we offered nothing else.
Usually when this is the case, Fletcher can make chances through the middle or Sessegnon can work some magic - but today they were both poor and we looked lifeless as a result.
Title: Re: After Match Debate

Okay we were poor today much as I would like to blame Pulis for it I don't think I can beyond his inability to drag them out of the torpor that seemed to engulf the team. Tactically we looked closer to a rigid 4-4-2 than the 4-3-3 but that said two of the most important cogs in our recent success Sessegnon and Berahino were both very poor and didn't get on the ball anywhere near enough.

Yet again we struggle against a poor, struggling team who clearly lacked confidence and, if were pressed and attacked with a bit of pace and guile, would have collapsed like a pack of cards. But there we have it, we have no pace and guile - especially in midfield.
Yes, if teams come at us and are keen to retain possession, we have players who are willing to run, stay in shape, concentrate, break the game up and hope that we get a chance but we cannot create anything . Hence the 'hoof' tactics. Add to this the fact our 'fullbacks' are centre-backs who offer no attacking width and we have the obvious - the performance today and the other days when we play poor teams.
Incidently, how much did we miss a decent cross from the left today, Mr Brunt?

It can only work playing Pulis football, when everyone puts in 100%,everyone is 100% discipline ,  we keep a clean sheet, and then if we are lucky we can nick a 1-0. Today was partly the players fault as half looked as if they had summer holidays on their mind.
There just isn't enough quality or creativity on the team to dig us out if things go wrong. And no width in the team. No proper wingers or wing backs. Apart from McLean later on. Sessegnon cuts inside too much , Evans is a good centre back , but no way can he offer width going forward, and Gardner is a holding midfielder, not a wideman. Result is the team is too bunched together, getting in each others way  in the middle.

To any Norwich fans reading this. Don't get carried away. You would have been beaten by any side putting in a half decent performance.

Poor lethargic performance, the week off did us no favours. Olsson,Sessegnon, Fletcher, Berahino, Dawson,Gardner and McAuley all well below par. Hope to god Olsson is dropped for the next match and we can have Evans in the centre and Chester at left back.

Game had 0-0 written all over it until a lapse in concentration gifts them a goal.

I don't mind losing so much but when it's against a team that employs such obvious gamesmanship it wrankles. Taylor should have booked one of theirs in 1st half (number 8 with the bandage) and maybe that would have stopped it.

We need Morrison as  soon as possible.

I don't know why we are so surprised I have supported Albion for 50 years and we have always had this weakness where we lose to lower teams in the league than us even when we had the great teams of the 60's and late 70's/early eighties, we have not been ruthless enough to beat inferior teams.

To say it has been a very poor season is an over reaction again to our first defeat at home this year, the reason we have got 39 points is that we have a good record of picking up points against some of the better teams in the league as Pulis seems to get the players motivated for these games but against the likes of Villa, Norwich and Bournemouth we are flat and appear not to be motivated for these games.

A poor game all round. Norwich came and played a defensive 442 against us who also play a defensive 442 so it was never going to be a great spectacle. One of out weaknesses is taking the game to and breaking down the opposition. This stems from a lack of creativity in the middle of te park and a lack of ball playing ability. We would have had a much better chance with Brunt in at left back and Evans in at centre back as both can play the ball out from the back, obviously with Brunt injured this wasn't an option. When a team sets up like this against us, we do really need width and width from the full backs at that. Although he would never play him, to win the game yesterday, Pocognoli would have been a much better option; Pulis did have the right idea with McLean but his crossing was poor.

Posters saying we struggle against the teams below us in the table, yes, we do. We are not a team set up to break sides down, we are a solid team first and foremost who have been doing well recently utilising space for Rondon to run into and Berahino to support. Teams below us don't often allow us that space, they sit back, wait for a mistake and counter. They know we lack creativity and ball playing ability. That's the reason why we do not do as well, nothing to do with effort or application.

Finally, we have been a defensive it counter attacking team for years. We certainly were under Hodgson although he found ways to vary the approach a little more than Pulis, we certainly were better at counter attacking under Di Matteo and Clarke too. You have to go back to Mowbray when this wasn't the case. There's nothing wrong with being a counter attacking side but you need either a couple of outstanding individuals (like Leicester) or a manager with clever ideas and a squad with good options to flit between a side that just counter attacks and one that can break teams down.

It's only my opinion but we have had a fair amount of luck to get to where we are, eg, the Everton, Newcastle, Arsenal wins and others where we had a lucky break. It's all fine margins. Maybe it's frustration at the dross and dire grinding out performances for the last three seasons or maybe it's generally just felt like hard work this season.

I doubt very much that anyone else could do better than Pulis to be fair, we seem to have a bunch of players who talk the talk but rarely walk the walk and more and more matches are like this.

It's not an over reaction, just my opinion, yes we haven't lost this year at home and yes it's a points driven business and yes survival is paramount but the Hawthorns is like a morgue this season so I'm not the only one totally bored out my mind and frustrated with it all.
Title: Re: After Match Debate
Post by: Standaman on March 20, 2016, 11:34:11 AM
I think there are few slightly separate issues highlighted by yesterday's performance.

1. There is the negative approach of the coach and frankly we could have won or drawn that game and it would not have been any more uplifting. If it was a one off or we could draw on anything other than a handful of games that have been different then maybe you shrug your shoulders and go "oh well" but unfortunately with Pulis you feel it is normal service has been resumed.

2. Mid-table teams are there because they lack the quality and or the consistency to push beyond it. You often preface comments about their players with the phrase "on his day" whereas you don't use that phrase too often when describing the players that populate the teams that generally occupy the upper reaches of the table. For a team like Albion to have 4 or 5 players somewhat below par usually means one thing and that is defeat and that is what happened yesterday.

3. The over riding focus on forty points and survival for us is self limiting and once we get there the players mentally switch off and we often put in a few shocking performances in the immediate aftermath of getting to that goal. It is not just this year but pretty much every year since we returned to the Premier League, from the no show at Wolves in Roy's first season through the Clarke slump and the appalling performances that followed our securing of top flight football under Mel.

Incidentally it is not just us but countless teams that have hit the beach as soon as they think they are safe and have had poor ends to seasons which were otherwise quite promising.

4. There are players in the squad that need replacing but we shouldn't judge them on yesterday's performance because frankly you would keep Yacob and let the rest go but it did highlight how far out of favour some players are with Pulis and the extent to which the squad might be reshaped over the summer.

I think we were out pulisised today , they tried their hardest not to lose it and we tried our hardest to make sure they did not , that was one pathetic performance, the winner was comical to say the least, but to be honest it always looked like it was going to be that way, i'm afraid you Norwich fans are still probably going down because you will not meet any other sides as poor and as generous as us on the run in despite the point you got from City, but if it does inspire you to survive fair play to you.
as for we are concerned I am sure there will be a couple more surprising results for us around the corner and although they will absolutely make sure we are safe they will not be pretty, I am only glad that I only have to go to Sunderland as the rest of the away games with the exception pf Bournemouth are on the TV so I can save myself some time and money roll on the end of the season, then maybe we will get the players in we need to improve on this season

A poor performance and a rubbish game between two poor teams.

The onus was on us to have a go and break them down and yet again we didn't have a clue what to do. Our attacking play in those situations is far too predictable. The reason we do so well against those better teams is because it allows us to soak up pressure and stifle the game.

Can't say anybody can come out of yesterday with any credit.

Tad harsh this. Looking good to achieve over 40 points and with a couple of wins should finish 12th I think. Yes it's been disappointing at times(what's new) buy we are effectively safe now. Like many other teams around us, we lack consistency, but if anyone else said we'd be 2 points behind Chelsea and probably ahead of Everton(with their extra game) id snap your hand off.

Why again all this negativity over reaction on this site when we beat Man Utd and over reaction now when we lose to Norwich. We look at the last game and consider the season to be very poor, lets look at Newcastle and Villa for example who have spent far more than us on transfer fees and wages and look where they are, that is what you consider to be a very poor season. I feel that we comfortably will reach mid 40's points which would be a satisfactory season. Look at Manchester City today, very poor performance, every team in the premier league with probably the exception of Leicester and Spurs have had poor performance's. I feel that we need to take a balanced view of our season rather than harping on about some poor performance's/results.

I thought Man City's performance yesterday exactly matched our game on Saturday. Absolutely bossed it, until a mistake from Demishelis gifted Utd the goal, then couldn't get back ito it.

But they have spent a bit more money than us!

don't think he ever finished higher than 11th at  stoke, a club with far more money to throw at it than albion. can only see survival being the aim  for us and sadly that's irrelevant who the coach is.
Perhaps he thinks if we finish too high, we will get ideas above our station and look for a more modern progressive manager. Whereby, if he restricts us to 12th-17th, he can convince JP that we will still be in the relegation fight next year, so he is, obviously, the best man for the job!
Maybe Palace changed his targets for season 2 and that's why he did a runner. :o

I'm agreeing with you, when you suggest it's an over reaction to single out Saturdays game as a reflection of our season as a whole.
Although the pace of play on Saturday was pretty pedestrian, we were the only team that was going to win, until we conceded the goal.

Had a 6 match accumulator. 5 matches won. Guess who let me down?

Effing useless.
The best bit of advice my dad gave me more than 40 years ago was never bet on the Albion!!! I never have!

How do you work that out? We had 0 shots on target and never looked like troubling the keeper. No one deserved to win that game until our defence gifted them.

Not entirely unexpected result now they know they are safe but the performance was nothing short of disgusting. Only player that came out of the game with any credit in my view was Yacob, the rest of them were pathetic and there are absolutely no excuses.

I don't blame Pulis for the defeat at all but his decision to drop Chester instead of Olsson for Evans was a joke.

if I was chester I would definitely want a transfer, he played well enough in the previous two matches to keep his place and like you say he should have dropped Olsson for evans. Olsson has been very poor for about a month now anyway.
