If anybody thought that transfers were easy this from Paul Conway Barnsley's co-chair

"We really need players who want to play for Barnsley, who want to be at our club. And during the process this summer of looking to strengthen our squad, we've had some really interesting situations.

"We reached agreements with three different Premier League clubs for three players we felt would be ideal for us in terms of their talent. One of these players told us we'd need to pay him 40% more to play for Barnsley. That was a short conversation. The second one basically told us he didn't agree with our style of play, that we'd need to change that if he was to come. Again, a very short conversation.

"The third one is the funniest one. We had a signed transfer agreement, we'd agreed personal terms, we'd done the medical and the player was scheduled to do his media pieces before signing the contract. And then the player just drove away! We were like, 'where did he go?' and he'd just left the club and got in his car and left!

You have to feel sorry for the people working behind the scenes to get these deals done but I guess they found out their potential recruits were less than committed before they put pen to paper.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea At The Time

With just two days left until the window closes there is still a lot that might happen and the last few deals a club does might make their squads more rational, make deals that were puzzling less so and everything will become clear. But right now West Ham have done a proper West Ham thing and only gone and signed Kurt Zouma from Chelsea.

Kurt Zouma is maybe the best Centre Back West Ham can get. Not a Rolls Royce defender more your Jeep Cherokee but perfectly fit for purpose, a dominant defender in good running order and without too many miles on the clock. However having spent the budget (£31m fee and a very big wage) on this nice shiney off roader you realise it’s a bit of nightmare to drive in the City and you also need a cheap run around to ferry the kids to school (Central Midfield Cover) and you need a Van for your business (Centre Forward cover for Antonnio). But the Jeep Cherokee is lovely although maybe a bit useless without the other bits of business that have been delayed while you haggled over the deal.

More Odd Stuff

Watford cut their squad down to the bare bones selling Will Hughes for £6m to Palace but thankfully kept their horde intact by backfilling with Mouso Sissoko from Spurs.

When you make your full international debut at 16 for Croatia and join Barcelona as a teenager you don’t expect to move from Birmingham City to Reading on a one year contract as a free agent at the age of 25 which is the career path that  Alen Halilovic has followed.

Reading have also signed one of Chelsea’s long term loan army,  left back Abdul-Rahman Baba who they paid Ausberg £20m for 5 years ago and still have another 3 years on his contract (one which was extended in 2020, no I don’t understand either)

The return to Burnley of Aaron Lennon following his release last summer is a little odd although maybe having played 36 games in Turkey last season there is a bit of life left in his legs yet.

Max Lowe has joined Notts Forest on loan having never made a competitive appearance for Sheffield United which is a bit of a head scratcher.

The hot cold cycle of Alexander Sörloth’s career went through a cold cycle at Leipzig last season so he is on the move again this time he is off to Real Sociedad in La Liga on loan . If the Norwegian International runs true to form he will score at least 15 goals this season.

Remember the Name

Seeing a lot of Spurs fans getting quite excited by the signing of Pape Sarr, the next big thing to come out of French football, we will have to wait and see as the 18 year old Defensive Midfielder has returned to Metz on loan for the season.

I’m not sure whether Southampton’s signing of Brazilian Centre Back  Lyanco from Torino is inspired scouting or scraping the bottom of the barrel. Relatively cheap at a bit over £6m and there is a player there but huge question marks over his progression which has been hampered by injury. Time will tell.

Kamal Sowah joined Club Brugge from Leicester City for £8m which might seem great money for a kid who has never played for the first team. I think they will regret letting the youngster go. He is going to be a star but then again so was Alen Halilovic.

Mitchell van Bergen and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp are the latest exports from the Eredivisie joining Reims and Hertha Berlin respectively not headline grabbing deals but young and with a couple years development could be very interesting prospects. It still never ceases to amaze me how much talent the Netherlands produces and exports around the tier one leagues.

The Green eyed monster stirs a little

Ike Ugbo joined Genk from Chelsea for just £3m. I'd have liked WBA to get that one huge upside potential ( will now probably have a career trajectory of a rock now I’ve cursed him) and more than capable of scoring bags of goals in the Championship.

Ligue 1 is still bleeding talent.

Xherdan Shaqiri has joined Lyon for £5m which is interesting given that earlier this summer Liverpool were looking for £15m for the 29 year old. Lyon will get a good player for 3 years and a world class ****houser. However Maxwel Cornet who is happy anywhere down the wide left channel has left the French club for Burnley for £14m which summarises the relative positions of Ligue 1 and the Premier League.

The window shuts on Tuesday, Ronaldo will be formally announced and everyone will lose their mind. I’ll write something up that pulls the whole circus together when the dust settles.

The kid who didn’t think he would fit the style of play has done nothing wrong, if that’s all it was. He’s every right to look after his own career and think about where he would fit in and what would suit his game.

It would be interesting to know who the other two are and see where there careers go though as their behaviour was certainly poor.

The third signing, two things have happened here: Either his agent has been on the phone with a better proposition or having looked around the club etc. he’s thought nah, this club/set-up ain’t for me

Must have been bad though if he walked straight out without saying a word to any club officials. Interestingly enough, it makes no mention of the agent being present.

Still, an interesting read and I hope it’s not a poor reflection of how the South Yorkshire club are run.

There's a big problem here generated by the skewed finances in the game.  A lot of youngsters are hoovered up by the top eight clubs and get accustomed to the plush wages, perks  and atmosphere of their owning clubs.  so they get very greedy as evidenced by Stan's first example, big heads as evidenced by his second example or unwilling to live and play in smaller less glamorous surroundings.  In short, they are spoilt rotten.
It's a matter of doing searching interviews so that you can detect who genuinely wants to play above anything else - Gallagher was a fine example.

It does show how hard it has become for clubs like Barnsley and, I afraid, The Albion.

The money they’re spending is insane, Mitrovic’s new contract is 80k per week as well. Absolutely crazy in this league

Andre Gray looking likely to move to QPR, a club who seem to be spending a bit of money. Definite contenders for promotion and for all of the talk of clubs like ours having an unassailable financial advantage thanks to parachute payments, clubs like QPR and Boro seem to be far outspending us.

Norwich also signing Ozan Kabak from Schalke, having been on loan at Liverpool last season. Norwich haven’t been the best in the transfer window in the last few years, but they have made a couple of really top signings this summer and even if they come down, they will have evolved and improved their squad and will likely bounce back again even stronger. They are too cautious, but we could learn a thing from them.

I think part of the problem in the Barnsley examples I quoted the club seems to have gone about things the "right way" and agreed terms with the clubs involved rather than getting all the issues ironed out with the players agents before talking to the club.

I don't blame a player for turning down a move based on style of play (more should do it) but I think the suggestion that the club change to accommodate him is shall we say a little bit rich.

Fulham have been heavily subsidised by the Khan's they spent upwards of £150m on the project wasted a lot of it and will no doubt buy another promotion so escape championship FFP restrictions but they absolutely have to get out the first time of asking.

QPR and Middlesbrough's player budgets regardless of what they do in the next 48 hours will be about half of ours.

Wonder if he still sees himself as a CM. Might limit his options big time if he does.
