Keeping supporters informed
« on: May 21, 2019, 06:28:50 PM »
We all know how our club operates - keeping any information about new managerial searches close to their chest (sometimes, but not always justified). But I have just read a refreshing statement from the chairman of another Championship Club looking for a new manager, Swansea City, that keeps supporters fully informed about their recruitment process. It is worth a read...

In fairness, I have just read that there has been an update from our Club:
“We’ve narrowed it down to four,” technical director Luke Dowling said.
“We won’t get to squeeze all four in next week but in the next two weeks, we’d like to speak to all of them.
“We’ll gather our thoughts this end to see who we go back to. We’ll whittle it down to two and decide off the back of that.
“It could have started the morning after the Villa (play-off) game, but we wanted to take this week to gather our thoughts.
“It’s getting round to the people we want to speak to, having the right amount of time with those people and speak to them about how we see the running of the club in the next two to three seasons.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be announcing our new head coach in two weeks because it might take a little longer with complications if someone was in work.
“But in the next couple of weeks we will have spoken to them all.”
Dowling's statement is most welcome and a big improvement on how we have operated in the past.

In all fairness, LD has been very open since the end of the season. Set out the aims for the club, spoke about the management situation and told fans that we wouldn't be signing Dwight Gayle. A far cry from previous years, have to say fair play to LD for coming out lets see if the club keep it up going forward.

It at least it informs supporters what steps Swansea are taking to find a new manager. It is much better than stoney silence.

This means that one week prior to kick off, we may or may not have a manager.

also infers that we are considering people in employment, and that in turn implies we will pay compensation!

Compensation! I thought good managers were off the shelf at Tesco. Don't know what we're waiting for.

It was well worth a read and how refreshing to see how Swansea are taking the time to update supporters. I would love to see our board spokesman being as informative.

from that statement what are their steps? they said they want a manager (duh) and had applications (which we already know as it happens everywhere, so again duh), has to use kids (which we know because Swansea are skint same as last summer) and must have *generic buzzwords here". Nothing really states what their intention is, where they're looking, what personal qualifiers are needed etc.

There is very little that is in that text you couldn't have got by looking at their scenario for 10 minutes this season. Much like our original statement it points out the obvious with little substance but for some it's who said it and not what is said that matters, I'd prefer some actual data to work with like Dowling's interview you alluded to in the 2nd post which gives us a numbered shortlist and a time frame. The worthwhile info is Leon Britton going into their recruitment team (who you'd suspect will have links to ex managers like Martinez and Rodgers) and Routledge maybe staying another year, though that data's value isn't much. we could also draw conclusions with their wages being too high as well as to their possible transfer policy being similar to us(again we could've guessed that as they are in the same boat as us and half the league) which on our end would suggest we'll be fishing in similar ponds for both manager and player.

 The rest is largely inconsequential.

i am amazed at just how open and honest this piece is. Its a credit to the man and his club that they are honest and confident enough to share some of this stuff. If this is typical of how Swansea are ebing run I wish them success.

Did nobody read this?

It doesn't really set out much. The worst bit from it is the line: "“We want to put 11 players out there with a Head Coach leading them that represent West Bromwich Albion Football Club."

Surely 11 players and a head coach is the minimum we need. We're currently a bit short on even reaching that goal. We have had 3 months to sort out our head coach and we're still waiting patiently at the back while everyone else comes in and picks up the available talent.

The piece of information that I look forward to hearing from the Club is that our wretched ‘stay away’ owner, the greatly ‘esteemed’ Lai, has sold the Club.

Get out of our Club, Lai. LAI OUT!

Transparency is tricky in any business as those of us who run other businesses know.  There are lots of things that can’t be shared because of privacy issues or delicate negotiations.  If we are close to appointing someone an announcement could weaken our position.  In the past I’ve been accused by senior members of my own business of lacking focus when I’ve shared the number of irons that were in the fire, most of which will fail for a variety of reasons that were impossible to predict.  I now largely keep things to a very tight team until a deal is done.

Think of the number of genuinely ITK people who used to post on here about deals and developments that they knew were close to happening but fell over at the last minute.  There was then the inevitable criticism that either they were full of BS or that it was the club’s fault for messing about and not just doing the deal.
