Additional coaches needed?
« on: February 21, 2011, 08:43:52 AM »
With Eddie Newton and Ade Mafe having left with RDM, we would seem to have no fitness coach and be a first team coach down too at present. Therefore, given our situation, should we bringing another coach in (probably someone who Hodgson has worked with before) or hope that Downing can do a good enough job on secondment from the youth team? Remember that Appy was already a first team coach.

Personally I think we should be looking to bring 2 new coaches in (1 of whom is a fitness coach) and the sooner the better, otherwise I worry that there will be too much pressure on those already at the club.

I think we need 3 coaches in, a first team coach, fitness coach and a defensive coach!

Ashworth said there is room for Roy to bring new coaches in. We have positions open after Newton and Mafe left.

Yes I also saw that quote - I forgot to mention it. Presumably something will happen this week regarding a replacement for Newton. I guess the question is going to be whether or not Appy is promoted to Assistant Head Coach (or whatever Newton's title was!).

Lets get Ray Wilkins in!

He weren't very happy with us sacking Roberto, so I doubt he'd take it.

I'd expect to see some of Roy's boy's in next season.
Keith Barron is one that springs to mind

There was a report in the local press (I can't remember exactly where) last week that suggested Hodgson wanted to bring in Ray Lewington and Mike Kelly

I'd like to see a new goal-keeping coach come in but doubt it will happen.

So do I. I thought there was an element of jobs for the boys/cheap option in appointing Kiely. As I recall, Kiely wasn't very good at commanding his area himself, so why should he be any good at training others to do it. I think a club like ours which can't readily sign new keepers when outfield positions are usually likely to take budgetary precedence, needs an experienced keeper coach who's better than Kiely.

I've seen it said that the players (keepers or all?) like and respect him, but it's what they do on the pitch that's most important, and Carson and Myhill seem to be lacking some of the basics.

I reckon he'll leave it to the end of the season, weigh up his options and if he hasnt left himself he will bring some more coaches in

That logic really makes no sense. Going by that there's about 4 keepers who should be coaches and no one else. There's a big difference between being a good player and a good coach.
