Darren Fletcher moves to Stoke City
« on: January 27, 2015, 02:27:49 PM »
Time for a thread of its own

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/west-brom-target-darren-fletcher-8522825

West Bromwich Albion target Darren Fletcher has been granted a free transfer by Manchester United to help the club’s longest serving current squad member find a new club in the January transfer window.

The Scot, who’ll be 31 on Sunday, is contracted to Old Trafford until the summer but the club have waived any potential fee they could have received for the midfielder in order for the popular player to move quickly rather than wait for the summer.

West Ham are the favourites to land the Scottish international but Albion, Celtic and Valencia have all also shown an interest.

Head coach Tony Pulis wants to bring in at least four players in January and is hoping to complete the signing of Callum McManaman today.

Edinburgh-born Fletcher has been at United since he was 11 years old and made his first team breakthrough in 2003 and became an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad.

He fought and beat the debilitating ulcerative colitis but despite being named as one of new boss Louis van Gaal’s vice-captains at the start of this season but he has not been a regular for the Dutchman making only five starts and seven appearances as a sub.

Fletcher made 342 appearances for the Reds winning five Premier League titles, two League Cups an FA Cup and the Champions League though he sadly missed the 2009 final in Rome against Barcelona after being sent off in the second leg of the semi final at Arsenal.

With him now being avaliable on a free I can see a few more clubs entering the frame. In my opinion he will end up at West Ham sadly.

Would rather take Mbodj if the rumours are true about him but Pulis rarely buys anyone from non british leagues.

31! That has surprised me to be honest. Thought he was younger. We might have a chance now then but I still fully expect him to end up at West Ham.

I think he will end up at West Ham on a huge weekly salary.

Got a sneaky feeling Moyes might sound him out about a move abroad.

There were a few rumours on the dreaded twitter last night that he'd turned down West Ham but nothing today.

Sky Bet have us at 11/1 to sign Darren Fletcher and West Ham 1/10. It looks home and hosed for the Ammers.

4 year contract for a 31 year old with a severe chronic illness? Yeah, right, I can see why he would want that - I mean, who wouldn't.

Allardyce didn't sound that confident when asked about it earlier.

With the window closing Monday Fletcher really needs to be making his mind up now.

All comes down to whether he can sort out his issues with United from what I can gather. They want to release him on a free without paying up his contract as part of the deal whereas he wants his money from his contract, wouldn't surprise me if he stays until the Summer if they can't sort it out.

£75,000 a week apparently.  No wonder he's chosen them.

If we are going to spend that in wages on a player then let's hope its Demba Ba.  We must have been willing to go close to that for Fletcher or he'd have rejected us a lot earlier.......

I totally agree. Like I said on the general rumours thread I'd rather we go for someone like Cork or Shelvey.

If missing out on Fletcher means we go for Cork or M'Vila then I'm a happy man.

West Ham werwe rumoured to be interested in M'Vila as well so this should rule them out.

Will Fletcher be cup tied for our game against West Ham? I'm not too sure on Fletcher, he's not anywhere near as good as he was after his illness but he might have been able to do a job for us. Not sure what contract he will be on at West Ham but I suspect it's more money and more years than we would offer.

Got to love the negativity being spouted about the guy because we have missed out on him.

If he chose us it would be 'great signing' or 'just what we need'.

Fickle bunch  ;D
