West Bromwich Albion FC / Player Power?
« on: March 09, 2014, 11:03:42 AM »
So in the mayhem that our awful run has caused amongst fans I keep seeing posts about 'player power' and individuals who have too much of it?

Where has all this come from, have I missed something?

2
Plenty of people have brought this up and the fact that our poor end to last season could have a bearing this season.

I don't think the personnel we have is the main issue, yes pretty much the same squad will be starting this season it seems come Saturday but this is again pretty much the same core of the squad that got us to 11th and 10th for the two seasons before finishing 8th however the squad depth can be questioned.

A few things are changing e.g Odemwingie and Lukaku but we seem to be aiming in the right direction with our targets in trying to replace them.

I do think our squad size is an issue, I would be very surprised if the 22 we end the transfer window with are all 'notable' players and don't include the likes of Berahino etc. Yes it will be great for these players to get a good chance but it's been quoted plenty of times before the squad will be 22 players supplemented by a few youth. Berahino is down on a professional contract so does he count towards our 22?

I think the last half of last season our squad depth was really tested and it was midfield where we looked weakest with injuries. This hasn't been addressed yet and whilst Mulumbu and Yacob are a top drawer pairing I still think we need another high level CM to come in and keep them on their toes. Problem with this is it's obvious we need a winger or two or maybe even another striker so it may well be another case of make do with what we have got until at least January.

I am quite hopeful for this season and think we will be around midtable whilst having a good crack at one of the cups. Plenty of experience to stay away from relegation but not quite all there for a strong top half push.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Ill Discipline

It seems to be a growing issue in our squad. There have been various incidents over the last few months without needing to name the perpetrators.

Frustration boiling over, individual players decisions, or management issues? I do not know.

Definitely something we can improve on, not going to bother starting a witch hunt with regards to who's fault it is, I just thought I'd say it is a growing concern of mine.

How awful has he looked for France? Ok France haven't looked that good as a team but he really has been poor. Had a good season for Madrid to be fair but there is something I really don't like about him.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Bolton Away - Dingles Down?
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:25:58 PM »
So then we get to Bolton away and by then we would like to think we are safe.

We are in a position in the league where a win takes us no higher and defeat takes us no lower.

A Bolton win and they stay up at the Dingles expense.

Would anyone be tempted to will Bolton on to beat us? I can't imagine doing it myself it just wouldn't feel right. I don't know if I hate the Dingles enough to want us to actually lose a game.

Morally of course we shouldn't want to lose but would anyone be tempted? Just thought it was an interesting hypothetical question to ask.

General Football & Sports / Funny England Article
« on: January 23, 2012, 12:23:24 AM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/2641675.stm

January is a bleak, depressing month, brightened only by the occasional snowball fight and the fact there are no wasps.

But if you are an English football fan, there is at least some reason to continue living.

The recent steady flow of talented young stars has turned into an veritable torrent, with a new teenage hero seemingly unearthed every week.

A brace by 19-year-old Michael Tonge against Liverpool on Wednesday, while 20-year-old Neil Mellor was scoring at the other end, added two more names to this term's astounding production line of promise.

And future England manager Alan Shearer must be rubbing his sensible hands together in glee at the pot of gold maturing before his very eyes.

Your say: Pick the best of the bunch?
Goalkeepers

Chris Kirkland, 21 now, will be the world's finest goalkeeper by 2008, especially after another five years of shot-stopping practice at the back of Liverpool's attack-shy team.

Leeds' Paul Robinson, 23, is unlikely to be far behind his Liverpool rival and the two of them are likely to vie, Shilton-Clemence style, for the number one jersey for many years.

Defence

History has shown that every successful England international team has contained brothers, and Rio and Anton Ferdinand will form the bedrock of Shearer's defence.

Rio will be the team's veteran at 29, but Anton will possess the same assured approach and, let us hope, the same "funky" goalscoring celebrations.

Blackburn's Martin Taylor will be there to mop up when the siblings' rivalry causes them to lose concentration.

Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips will be devastating wing-backs, whose surging runs will leave Italians crying into their capuccinos and Germans blubbing in their bratwursts.

Midfield

This is where England excel, with the maverick talents of Joe Cole and David Dunn backed by the steel and vision of Steven Gerrard.

With Dunn (28 in 2008) and Cole (26 in 2008) possessing maturity and talent, all England need is for Gerrard (27) to end his current run of form which is, unfortunately, rubbish.

All three will be at their peak, and the onlooking David Beckham, who will probably retire from football at 30 to pursue a rock career, will smile in the stands as his successors shine.

Forwards

Rooney is but part of England's talent avalanche
England will have so much talent up front it will be embarrassing, and other teams may concede games before kick-off to avoid the humiliation on the pitch.

The original odd couple will spearhead the attack - Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.

Off the field, the pair will fight like dogs, but on the field they will combine to create flowing football poetry which will reduce even the most toughened defenders to mere shells of men.

And to keep them alert, the likes of Liverpool's Neil Mellor, Aston Villa's Darius Vassell, Leeds' James Milner and West Ham's Jermaine Defoe will all be in the prime of their careers.

A warning

No doubt England's rivals will be gnashing teeth at the land of milk and honey awaiting fans of the Three Lions.

But a look back one decade offers hope to those who thrive on England's failure.

When footballers go bad: Under-21 stars of 1993
Neil Ardley
Billy Kenny
Eddie Newton
Scott Minto
Richard Hall
Andy Awford
The England Under-21s side of 1993 does not exactly read like a list of world beaters.

For every Steve McManaman - himself an international disappointment - there is a Billy Kenny, a Neil Cox and a Nicky "Swindon Town" Summerbee.

Perhaps the end to what is rapidly approaching 40 years of hurt is not quite as close as it appears.

West Bromwich Albion FC / What's going on then?
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:19:10 AM »
Our home form has been shocking this season no two ways about it. I personally think we have had little luck at home yet had a decent share of it away.

Some of the results are head scratching at how we lost when the other team were as bad/good as us e.g Stoke, Wigan, Norwich where we were at least worthy of a point. I thought we lost these games in unfortunate circumstances, sure our play hasn't been brilliant but did we really deserve to lose these games?

The end to last season was superb and we have shown glimpses of it in games this season especially away from home but what exactly has gone wrong? It's the same players and if anything stronger players added. I think we just need a lucky break at home and the confidence will come from the players and hopefully we can kick on from there.

On the end of last seasons evidence and from some games this season Hodgson is certainly the manager for us in my eyes. We just need to show abit more consistency and results will come and confidence will be back up there again.

These two muppets have just declared us a disgrace for not wearing the poppy this week. Maybe they should do their research and see the work we did against Liverpool?

General Football & Sports / The FA and reviewing referees decisions
« on: October 23, 2011, 10:32:28 PM »
So why then is it if the ref sees an incident in the match and thinks its worthy of a yellow the FA can't step in?, whereas if he gives a red the FA have the chance to stick their noses in?.

This is something that the FA need to sort out ASAP. So many disgraceful decisions been left to stand and not enough people are been punished for what they do on the pitch.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Style of play?

"On the other hand we do need that clear head because we need to play the football that we know we can play, and suits us." - a quote from Hodgson yesterday.

Let's hope the players back it up if this is how Hodgson thinks. We all know how we can and should play with the players we have at our disposal and maybe Hodgson has realised this now?

I cannot stand the big teams, the bias they get stinks (as we all know). A longer programme on skysports, cameras in New York, build up like its the biggest match of the century (like always). I know I'm used to the awful bias the big teams get shown but it still frustrates me every time. One day things may change and when the Premier League isn't run by money maybe clubs like us will have the chance to prosper...

As for the game I hope they draw can't stand either team.

General Football & Sports / Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen for England
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:58:42 PM »
All the papers have annoyed me with this rubbish about Hargreaves and Owen looking to get into the England squad next summer. We should be looking for the next set of stars not digging up players from the past.

Hargreaves and Owen?? Give me Wilshire and Bent/Defoe every day of the week.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Team selection and formation
« on: September 18, 2011, 04:19:59 PM »
For me it's about getting the midfield balance right we all know this is the strongest area of our squad. If we are going to play 4-4-2 something has to give in midfield.

I think Thomas can work in a 4 man midfield, I think its him being told to work alot more defensively that is the problem. I'd put him wide left (as we know he works best that side) and Brunt also has to be in the XI for me so would end up wide right, he is the catalyst to most our attacking moves and is still very underrated by our own fans.

Then the big question is getting the balance right in the middle. Mulumbu and Scharner just doesn't seem like the right combination we get away with it in a 4-5-1 but in a 2 man partnership in the middle it's not enough. This is where Dorrans could come in for Scharner, when back up to speed we all know what he is capable of and I believe he can offer a reasonable amount of enough defensive assistance for Mulumbu as well as been the creative force.

This said you can go back and say Mulumbu's best performances last season came when playing alongside Scharner so is this where we start talking about a 4-5-1 to make sure that creativity is in the middle of the park? With this we are then left with the Long or Odemwingie question which not many people know the answer to.

Fact is we have plenty of options in this squad and it's a matter of getting it right but naturally fans are going to see some poor performances whilst we are making the transition to the right set up and team selection. Only time will tell I suppose.

West Bromwich Albion FC / The Squad
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:38:09 PM »
Thought I'd start a thread for the people who are satisfied with the squad we have assembled over the summer rather than the moaners who don't understand how a club is run.

Roy's come out and said he's got the signings he wants and I believe that Foster, Fulop, Mcauley, Jones, Gera, Long are improvements on Carson, Myhill, Meite, Zuiverloon, Cech, Barnes and Miller.

We may have missed the trick with a few players in our price range but every club has this summer, it's only expected.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Kick in the teeth?
« on: August 22, 2011, 12:14:02 PM »
Does it not frustrate anybody that whilst we run our club and do our business superbly two teams who I predicted will finish below us (QPR and Blackburn) now look like they are going to splash some decent money and improve their teams greatly.

I personally think we have a much better squad than QPR and maybe just edge it over Blackburn and just because they have people who 'can' splash the money they could well close that gap.

This is no snipe towards how our club is run by the way, it's just my frustrations that clubs around us will throw money around even though realistically they probably can't afford it.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Switch from Adult to Student season ticket
« on: August 06, 2011, 07:47:24 PM »
I renewed my season ticket as an adult this season even though I will be classed as a uni student in September. I was told by the club shop when I had 'proof' of been a student (as I didn't have this back in May) I would be able to get a refund of the price difference.

I've been sent a letter offering to enroll at the college (as the first year of my course is at a college) but I'm not in possession of a letter which says I have been accepted even though I know I have been after my interview a couple of months ago. Would the letter telling me to enroll be good enough as proof for the club? Any help would be much appreciated.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Hodgson and 4-4-2
« on: August 01, 2011, 12:34:58 PM »
We've always heard things like Hodgson prefers 4-4-2 and in an interview on the OS he's admitted it himself. This said what would peoples opinions be on playing it? Personally I don't think we should change the shape from last season as why try fixing something that isn't broke and with the midfield being the strongest area of our squad we should probably play 5 in the middle.

General Football & Sports / Dyer hits out at West Ham
« on: July 16, 2011, 09:46:49 PM »
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_7041067,00.html

QPR new boy Kieron Dyer has hit out at West Ham for their medical treatment during his injury-ravaged spell at the club.

Dyer has joined Premier League new boys QPR on a free transfer after being released by West Ham earlier this summer.

The 32-year-old endured an injury-hit four seasons at Upton Park and he has blamed some of his fitness problems on the bad advice he got from the club's medical team.

"It's very frustrating when you're doing all you can to get fit but you're being told the wrong information," Dyer told the Daily Express.

"Two seasons ago I was out with a hamstring injury for almost the whole season. I kept coming back on advice but kept pulling my hamstring. I went to see a specialist who said 'You've got a big piece of scar tissue in your leg. Break it down and you'll never have a hamstring problem again'.

"I broke that down and what happened? I never had a hamstring problem again.

"It's frustrating when you're doing everything you're told to do but you're being misdiagnosed, so you're doing all the rehab but you're doing the wrong rehab," he said.

"You come back and break down again and you go and see another specialist and they say, 'Why have you been doing that?' That happened a number of times where I lost months and months of the season."

Quite poor from West Ham I think, just goes to show how good our medical team must be with the wonders we have worked on a few players over the last few years and how important investment is in this side of the football club is.
