Styles was OK at LB when there was a system and every player knew his part in it and the strengths and weaknesses of his fellow defenders.  Unfortunately the system drilled into the defence by Corberan is falling apart and we need its replacement whatever that may be, PDQ.

Yep, he is clearly not cut out for this particular style compared to under Corberan. In fairness, he wasn't signed as a LB so it's a bit unfair to judge him. We need to be looking at Heggem or Frabotta there, but even with Heggem there's no certainty he will do well there under Mowbray.

Agree entirely, I said during the transfer window we needed a striker, a progressive midfield player and a left back, as the song goes, two out of three ain't bad, but the lack of a decent left back is now pretty detrimental to our prospects.

After the first 10mins at Leeds when he got caught on the wrong side of his attacker he seems to have been much more restrained in the last two games (as has Furlong )and defensively has been much better for it

Thought he recovered after a bit of a shaky start on Saturday. Went on to have a good game. Made up for a lack of stature by timing his jumps well. Looking good.

Overall Styles has been good this season and IMV has really improved as the season has gone on.  He also shows real commitment to the cause which I really like to see.

Can anyone remember what he said that his best position is, off the top of their heads?

Pretty sure he said central midfield in his introduction video.

Cheers Dan! Would be interesting to see how he gets on there, at some point.

Agreed. We might get to find out if Mowatt gets injured.

He often seems to move into midfield, turning our formation into a back three when we're well in possession on attack.   Having a few versatile players means we don't have to hunt around for two players in every position.

Love this little bloke so much, that last ditch tackle was absolute immense.

For someone 'not a proper left back' not much gets past him.

Just think we lose out down the left flank with him when we're attacking. He nearly always drifts inside. Ideally we need our left back to interchange with the left winger, able to get around his opposite back and sometimes hitting the by-line. Furlong is slightly better at that on the right side, though by no means perfect.

Hypothetical question. Who would you prefer to see on the right side of our defence? Darnell Furlong or a right footed version of Callum Styles?

On balance, it would be Furlong. If its a case of shoehorning Styles anywhere into the team, there's maybe a case, but as an attacking full back we lose out.

Fair enough and cheers for answering a hypothetical question. Physical qualities aside I'd be inclined to go with a right footed Callum Styles myself as I feel he adds more to our team performances than Darnell as a whole. I haven't done any statistical analysis to back this up by the way, it's purely an unconsidered subjective opinion  ;D .

In not doing any statistical analysis, we are both on the same page.  :)
I think its to do with how I see the best teams setting up. I like full backs bombing forward in interchange with the wingers. Furlong and Fellows seem to have a good understanding and that can lead to one or the other getting in behind, and from that they set up lots of crosses and cut backs. If the winger hasn't got that support, he's more restricted.
I don't know where Styles best position is, but I don't think its full back. I think he's more of a Molumby type player, so maybe in midfield.

I agree with your thesis that an inverted winger needs an overlapping full back who has a dominant foot on the side he's playing on.  But he does do that  - perhaps not as frequently as you would like.  Maybe that's because he's a midfielder.  He's certainly better than the Frabotta alternative.   He could also be a Mowatt alternative but without the shots on goal maybe.

I don’t think this a reflection of Styles but more so the modern game in general. It’s been fairly common for full backs to tuck inside into midfield rather than going behind their wide man. It depends on what side we’re attacking really because if one pushes in then the other full back tucks in.
