World Cup 2022 Thread
« on: November 21, 2022, 09:04:58 AM »
About time we had one of these really so everything doesn't go in the England thread.

It's cold, wet, windy and it's November with England playing their first game today and it feels very very odd to not be heading to a beer garden or outdoor showing of our KO.

Anyway, 3 games today. England aside, USA v Wales should be pretty good.

FA said this morning that if Kane will get booked for wearing his one love armband then they probably won't let Kane wear it

This is the main issue with this World Cup, the football is constantly coming secondary.

I guess it's a good opportunity here to remind people to not bring politics to this board. Not you Gazberg as Kane having a yellow does become part of the footie but debates could easily slip into the politics of this World Cup.It would be great if we just put football first.  :D

Confirmed now that no nations will be wearing the one love armband due to threat of booking. Reported that Wales had been considering it too.

FIFA also say no opening ceremony before every game which was planned? I had no idea of that.

People do struggle to leave politics out of it which is human nature i guess. I'm just writing the confirmed news and leaving it at that.

Difficult to leave out of this particular sporting event when the awarding of it was based on Politics and Finance rather than footballing considerations

Poor opening game. Ecuador didn't have to get out of 2nd gear. Qatar will end up with more yellow cards than points and goals ;D

I hope Senegal and the Netherlands give Qatar right hammerings.
It doesn't matter how many resources you have.
If you don't know how to use them, they will never be enough.

Hard not to see the Dutch scoring close to double figures against Qatar if they want or need to . Would be good giving these and FIFA a proper bloody nose for their stupidity !

I concur.
Stupid and corrupt decision to go to Qatar in the first place so everything that flows from that is FIFAs own fault, hopefully the football will win through and be good.
Pitches look great.

A sensational foul by Acosta there. I think that’s a good result for us in the end. Pressure on Wales and the USA now to beat Iran.

Someone called? ;D

Played them off the pitch for a half, and looked scared in the second.  Stupid, lazy foul to give Bale a penalty.

What has been going wrong with the US Septic? On paper your squad is surely second best in the group and yet you’ve had some really poor results this year. One of the preview podcasts I listened to saw all three pundits rank you as coming last. Is it a bit like the old English “golden generation” and they just aren’t gelling?

Not just that - they were genuinely technical and could play decent football as well.

I see former baggie Krychowiak is starting for Poland, always thought he was a class act personally. I have no idea why he came to play for us(apart from money) and after a few games I have no doubt he thought the same.

A few years later we were treated to Hugill....how the mighty fall.

I thought they were pretty poor. They were lucky they weren't at least 3 down at half time.

Argentina were very poor. They reminded me of us earlier in the season second half Di Maria putting crosses into the box with no one there.

Saddest thing is seeing Messi like this. He's a quarter of the player he once was, can't move.
