The club marking the passing of the King 20yrs ago this week, a nice touch.
It's thanks mainly to Jeff that I got "blessed" with the love of Albion god bless him.

Nice one Albion, here's hoping it goes better than the last tribute to him.
It doesn't matter how many resources you have.

Well done Albion. I got his autograph when I was a kid. He was really happy to talk to us, a truly lovely man.  I was so star struck as a ten year old, I could not say anything !

The programme cover looks brilliant. I met him in the early 90s as he was a special guest handing out my fishing club’s trophies! My Nan and Grandad used to run the Throstle Club in the 60s on Halfords Lane and did all the dinners for the players and my grandad had kept in touch with him. Apparently he was addicted to the fruit machines!

I just find it incredible the links between our two kings.
Both 59 when they passed, both mid January deaths, and of course neither ever surpassed.

(Never ever discounting our many other greats like Laurie, Cantello, Robson and Bomber.)

Come on Albion get an emphatic win, this is a proud club you are ambassadors for.

My dad and his brothers were heavily involved with Blakley Hall Cricket Club and, at the end of every cricket season, they would ask Albion players to make presentations at the end season annual awards evening.

Jeff and his wife Lararine would always, always oblige, along with the likes of John Kaye, Doug Fraser, John Osbourne et al. They were just ordinary folk like you and me.

The presentation evening was always at The Merrivale in Langley, for those that know it. I went past the old place the other day for the first time in about 3 years, it is derelict and the roof badly damaged by fire, I could have cried as also, mom and dad would take me and my brother their on Sunday evenings during the summer to the garden and my brother and I would be treated to a bottle of Vimto and a packet of plain crisps that contained a bag of blue salt. Happy Days!!  :)

A great tribute to Jeff by Barry Fry.
I often labelled Fry as a loudmouth but after reading that article, my opinion has changed - well done Barry Fry

Well done Barry Fry! To be fair I've always liked him, one of the games characters, a bit like marmite I guess!

Lovely stuff. Can't believe their editorial staff had to explain who was whom in the photo though. To save Liam the effort I will point out that I am of 'that' age  ;D  ;) .

Would be great if Daryl Dike opened his account and scored the winning goal in this match.

I recall Jason Roberts scoring the only goal against Walsall on the day the passing of Jeff was announced.

Well I can consign my disdain for Barry Fry to the bin after reading that, 2 days running now, I am sitting at my desk emotionally challenged.  Thanks lads -- really thank you.

Its amazing how deep the influence these heroes have on us !

Lovely stuff to read. What we wouldn't give for someone like Jeff now. Not just on the pitch but off it as well.

I met Jeff at Spring Road training ground in 67/68.
I was having trials for WBA having been spotted playing for Aston Boys (district)
He seemed massive to me a big imposing guy, I was 15 years old.
My hero was Bobby Hope so you can imagine what it was like for a kid to see the king getting massaged and watching that truly great bunch of players training
I remember Sir Bobby, Dougie fraser, chipper, Graham Williams and of course Bomber it was unbelievable times, that team was really great full of internationals and all willing to have a little chat with me, I'll never forget those times.

We were very privileged to have seen all the guys mentioned at their peak. Heroes, all, great players and easy to approach, prepared to make time for supporters. Watching them play every week, and us standing on the terraces singing our hearts out. Great times gentlemen, thank you all for the memories you created for so many of us. It's shame we cannot hold a memorial day for each of them, but if there can be only one to represent them all it is right that it is The King, so many good times with him up front.

It's nice the Albion are doing a tribute to Jeff Astle. He is an hero to many of us that grew up watching the Albion in the sixties when we truly the pride of the Midlands.

I was there in '68 when, after he scored that goal, he stood right in front of me with arms aloft knowing he had just won the cup for us.
