I just hope the number of appearances is at least 35 to trigger the extension

Just a pure guess from me that it is 30 league starts, i.e. around 2/3 of a season, which would seem to be a reasonable balance and compromise.

It's got to be a lot higher than the 9 appearances Gourlay set surely 😂

Personally I would have rather parted company with Bartley but it is very evident that Corberan is a big fan and I have to concede he had a good season. However if as reported he has taken a significant wage cut to re-sign, the club has to offer something reasonable as a trigger for the second year otherwise another club could have offered less but guaranteed the 2nd year. My hunch is it will be around the 20 game mark.

20-ish games is reasonable in my opinion. Gourlay and 9 less so!

So potentially yet another 2 seasons with Bartley . I was hoping that we had learned from the past but it appears not . Lucky to get any extension given his injury record over the last couple of seasons .

CC is a big fan so i would imagine it's been driven by him and considering CC has had no transfer budget yet then i think it's only fair we appease him here and there.

I hope the trigger is around 30 at least.

Also, I don't really think KB and SA together at the back are good enough, as they were responsible imo for the average of 2 per game we conceded at the start of last season.

Ideally, I would prefer to move on SA if possible.

I’m happy with this news. He had an excellent season last time out and it is only one year after all.

Glad he has committed to another year. We are almost certain to lose Kipre and losing both your starting central defenders wouldn't be a great start.

Agreed and we have a settled proven player at this level who leads the backline well. Nobody better available on a free. Would have been very high risk to try to replace both first choice centre backs this summer. Especially when we already have no significant resource and need a goal scorer.

Think it’ll probably be this Norwegian lad and Caleb Taylor

I really doubt Corberan would go with such an inexperienced centre pairing.

It'll be Bartley and one from Ajayi, Taylor, Heggen (if he signs) or even Kipre (if he re- signs)

I assume he is on reduced terms like Mowatt supposedly is? If so this is a solid deal as he was very good last season.

Both were offered reduced terms by all accounts.

I think that's probably right, but I'm also sure that their agents have been busy since the new deal was offered and haven't managed to come up with anything better, so I'm thinking that the reduced terms were still pretty decent.

Yep, no doubt they had no offers near the contracts we had given them in the past and hopefully realised they had been overpaid relative to league they are in and then we were still the best offer, even on reduced terms. No issue with them looking for more money of course.

Whilst I'm sure that will be the plan, Bartley very rarely goes through a season injury free.

There will therefore need to points in the season where the partnership is two of Ajayi, Taylor and Heggen (or A.N.Other signing).

I just wanted to give this a bump because i thought he was brilliant yesterday yet again. After Birmingham at home a few years ago i thought his career here was done but the turnaround has been great, long may it continue.

Agreed. I was amongst his biggest critics when he first signed, but he is another who, under CC, has improved no end. He has never had pace, so he is the sort of player who would likely not have such a dip with age and the experience he now has has made him a much better player. Looking very solid alongside the often maligned on here, Semi, and you struggle to see Heggem breaking that partnership up if CC sees Frabotta as the long term left back choice.

Nothing has changed, he's always been good when you ask him to do the 'big lump defender' things.

Ask him to move away from that and things drop off.

Long may he continue to be left alone to defend.

There was a time in the first half where he walked the ball out of defence, shooed away everyone showing for the ball then proceeded to lump it out for a goal kick. A few seasons back, he would have done this 10 times a game, now he's just concentrating on defending he's showing what a good 'proper' CB he is.

So given that he has been given a new contract and could still be with us next season as well if he makes the requisite number of appearances. Was this a wise move given his performances this season ?

I totally understand the 1 year deal but the extension seems nuts if the clause is Gourlay levels of appearances.

He's been the worst of the 2 CBS so far this season

Not sure what his contract says but, before today, we had conceded 2 goals in six games and he’s been a key part of that.

What I don't like is that he blames others for  his errors.  Against Plymouth he let an attacker get the wrong side of him and get clear on goal .  Luckily Palmer saved with his feet.  Then KB turns round and shouts at everyone else. Hand over the armband.
