You're the manager!
« on: April 11, 2015, 06:06:04 PM »
Ok so we're all pity drunk off this evening! We've all got our opinions but who really could make a match winning team out of what we have at our disposal? TP may have covered his back by saying it's his toughest job! We had a couple of perhaps unexpected results against midtable teams but its a different kettle of fish it seems against those with something to play for!
I'm struggling to pick 11 that I rate! It might seem harsh but who do we have thats up for a battle, good enough, young & hungry enough? Unless we play the U21's!
I would only have Dawson, Berahino & Fletcher (maybe Lescott) in my team from whats available!

Perhaps this is parallel to my 'who should go' thread

varela should have been kept for a start, he was the only genuine wide player with any skill we've had at the club this year.

Keep Varela and start Poco over Brunt, drop Brown for Sess in the middle behind Saido for me.

I would play full backs who are full backs for a start
They couldn't do any worse than the current incumbents (not blaming the players but I do blame playing them out of position)

I wouldn't play the midfield two yards in front of the back four. Nowhere for us to go to relieve pressure other than smash it long to players who can not hold on to the ball and therefore it comes straight back in.

The personnel have shown, when played correctly, they are capable of getting results (under both coaches this year).

I keep hearing that Gamboa, Pocognoli, and Davidson aren't any good. But they haven't been seen in months, apart from a few matches when they were still adapting to English football. Irvine and Pulis both judge them to not be good enough, despite all three being international players, with Gamboa having been one of his countries stars at the world cup. I think it says more about the 'managers' than the players personally.

Agree. Play a proper left-back, put Brunt back on the wing. Ideye isn't good enough, put Sess in the no.10 role behind Saido. Put McManaman on the other flank, Fletcher & Yacob in the middle.

I would of done the logical thing and played a natural proper left back in that position like wise right back. I would of kept Varela and possibly even of kept Samaras (anything is better then Anichebe) I would of liked to of seen samaras given a fair chance. Sessegnon for me is one of our best players yes he blows hot and cold more often then many but when he is on his game he is a real game changer.

He was on the bench yesterday?

First time for about 5 weeks.  Not match fit and his absence has hurt us, if only in removing options

I agree with this wholeheartedly. He actually looked like he had something about him and would have provided us with a good option.

Getting rid of him actually weakened a squad which is already severely lacking in talent. Even worse, we didn't really replace him. You may suggest McMannaman but a winger was needed anyway.

Yes mind blowing really looking back. We get in touch with parent club and get his injury sorted out. He looks decent while picking up full fitness, then TP appeared to fallout with him within a week. Removed an important option for us.

I didn't see enough of Varela on which to judge him really.

It's worth noting that, in an 11 year career, he has had more loan clubs (5) than perminant clubs (3). There must be a reason for that.

I believe he has played 10 games for a struggling Palma since leaving us and scored 1 goal.

Myhill

Gamboa
Dawson
Lescott
Pocognoli

Yacob
Fletcher

McManaman
Sessegnon
Brunt

Berahino

Subs:

Rose
Wisdom
MacAuley
Mulumbu
Morrison
Ideye
Anichebe

That team would keep us up imo. Obviously given our run in maybe the right back spot needs looking at but those players would be able to hurt teams

Totally agree with that starting 11 if all are fit.

I'd even swop Wisdom for Gamboa as it looks like he'll never get a game.

Add some pace instead of this O.A.P standard line up , that pensioners side in the Barclays advert could out pace our lot! ::)

Those you mentioned have played for the U-21s and got hammered. They should be dominating in those games if they are going to make a difference in a Premier League game.

I just really really don't rate Wisdom. I'd rather have Baird in there.

A bit more on Varela, can't guarantee absolute accuracy, but gives a guide at the least.

Years Played 11
Games played 265
Games per Year 24
Goals Scored 54
Games Per Goal 4.90

Keep Varela
Play Poco
Play Gamboa
Drop Gmac and replace with Dawson
Play Macmanaman
Dont ever play Gardner or Baird ever again
Bring back Dorrans
Give some young forward a chance
After recent performances, sack myself unless I'm willing to try other options rather than picking the same old rubbish week afer week, which I'm not, so yes, sack myself

If i was manager i would look at how the Leicester team was set up during the second half.

To me, Leicester in that second half showed perfectly how to play the 3-5-2 system and i believe that we have the players to fit that system. The wing backs in Leicester's case was Schlupp and Albrighton who aren't natural full backs yet they played the system brilliantly. They were constantly up and down the flanks attacking when they needed to and getting back when we were rarely on the attack.

In my eyes we have 2 players that can fit into the Schlupp/Albrighton role and they are Pocognoli/Gamboa. In what we saw of Pocognoli its fair to say he could quite easily get up and down the wing and im under the belief he is better at defending than Brunt. Gamboa again is someone who has proved in previous club/national games and even in the brief time we have seen him in an Albion shirt we saw that he got forward and was able to cross (i.e. the assist against Burnley). Obviously we have other players that could potentially play this role such as Brunt/McManaman but i would like to see 2 different players who are currently out the team given the chance.

My main issue with our team is the fact we have no pace and absolutely no width. I would 100% rather take the gamble and do the above instead of seeing square pegs in round holes every week. No-one will ever be able to convince me that Brunt is better than Pocognoli at left back and we would benefit so much more from playing 2 players who are natural full backs in those position.

In my opinion we're sinking without a trace at the moment and i believe using the formation explained above and team selected below we would get the required points needed.

GK - Myhill

RWB - Gamboa
CB - Dawson
CB - Lescott
CB - Olsson/GMac
LWB - Pocognoli

CM - Fletcher
CM - Morrison

AM - Sess

ST - Ideye
ST - Berahino

Even when we play the bigger teams or away from home you can get rid of Ideye and swap him for another Central Midfielder such as Yacob then play Sess behind Berahino. We got 2 points last year in 2 away games against West Ham and Spurs playing 3-5-2 and that was with Ridgewell and Reid at full back so i am sure this would work.

But what do i know eh  ;D
