The 92
« on: February 25, 2015, 11:11:52 PM »
A game I used to play with my dad and his mates. How many of the current 92 league clubs home ground have you watched WBA? Old grounds sadly only count if WBA are yet to play at tbe new ground. I've done 59/92 lost a few too the confrence over the years. Haven't gained a new ground for about 5 years :(

So questions:

How many you done?
Worst away ground you have visited? (Portsmouth is a disgrace)
Best ground you have visited? (For me emirates)
Favourite old ground? (I always like watching WBA v posh)

I've done 46 current but been to quite a few that don't exist anymore.

Best: Newcastle, the two stands there are very impressive and I like the way it is in the heart of the city.  Controversial maybe but I also like Villa Park, its grand, modern but still has character and a sense of tradition.

Worst:  Personally I like old grounds or stadiums with character therefore I detest the soulless identikit bowels, pick any from Hull, Leicester, Southampton, Derby, Cardiff, Reading etc etc - they are all the same stadium.

Favourite old ground: Maine Road, had character, was raucous, intimidating and had those sinister looking alley ways behind the away end!

Having just gone through the league and Conference league tables, I'm up to 72 clubs visited, but the number of stadiums is a bit higher with quite a few clubs having built new grounds which complicates things a bit.

I'd say the worst ground visited was Hartlepool (v Albion in the early 1990's), and at the time it was a 3 sided ground (one of the side stands had been demolished) and it was an open terrace behind the goal, and the other 2 stands were just small "sheds".

It was a bit of a desperate place, and we'd arrived late so didn't even have a pre-match pint. Just one of those away days that seemed more of an ordeal than a pleasure.

I spent half the match gazing out at the ships sailing up and down the nearby North Sea coastline.

Best stadium - I used to really like the old St Andrews before it got redeveloped, what I call a "real" football ground, in a dodgy area, plenty of Pubs on the walk from the city centre and a real "edge" about the place.

From one extreme to another, I also like Craven Cottage, again a real traditional football stadium.

Griffin Park at Brentford is another one I really enjoyed visiting with the Albion. Again, a "proper" football stadium, and a Pub on every corner.

I'm not a great one for the modern stadiums, and prefer grounds that are a little bit different as opposed to the symmetrical identikit boring new grounds all over the place, though acknowledge the Emirates as a football ground is exceptionally good (even though you do feel as if you've gatecrashed a Corporate day out in many respects, plus all the daytrippers / touristy types all over the place).

32. 33 of 93 if you count Bristol Rovers at the top of the Conference. Worst place I've seen us play was The Manor Ground. They seemed to have imported tiny stands from various non-league teams. There were about ten stands in all!

53 but didn't realise I had been to so many although I've done so many grounds more than once. I'm very similar to Signor_Maresca.

Best - Newcastle for me, I think the ground is something special even though you need Oxygen when you get up all the stairs to the away end. Because of its location being high up it looks like the city has been built around the stadium, a real focal point.

Worst - It really depends what you like, any newer kind of bowl type stadium with no character that looks identical to so many others I absolutely hate and I've been to a fair few of them.

Favourite old ground - There are loads, the small old grounds are the ones I really like but like others have said Peterborough probably just about gets it for me as the design of the roof made the acoustics very good.

I've done 48. Mostly from early 80's up to mid 90's, so not done any new grounds apart from Bescot Stadium.

Hard to pick a best ground as before the all seaters came in they were all a bit dour. However, always used to like going to White Hart Lane for some reason and St Andrews for a Derby always a good atmosphere pre- 85/86 and we always used to win!!

Worst, Wigan Springfield Park.

Favourite old ground, Gay Meadow.

You're not wrong. It weren't even a stadium was it really?

I still prefer it any of the new modern stadia though which are all the boring same. Even Wembly isn't special anymore.
