realistic aim for next season?
« on: May 04, 2011, 07:37:00 PM »
i will probably get slated for starting this too early but worth the risk!
what should we be aiming for next season? finish 14th/15th and get our third season in a row in the top flight? or do we expect a top 10 finish? scrape relegation and a cup run? thoughts?

Safety is our main aim next season, how many teams do you see have a decent first season then get relegated the second

I agree with Pulis takes 3 years to make your self established ie Bolton, Fulham, Sunderland.

Blues found it much harder this season I expect the same for us, need to make sure we add to our first 11 because they didn't one reason why they have found it harder.

I worry that if we finish where we are... certain sections of our support will become very expectant and will start to get restless if were not challenging for europe.

Consolidating our long term place in the top flight while gradually building a premier league squad has to be what we look to do. Patience and hard work will be the key.

Safety should be the initial target, I'd take 15th place to be honest, quite respectable finish.

Realistic aim is to simply avoid the so called second season syndrome but you need to build on what you have, could be a difficult and somewhat frustrating summer.

It has been a pretty unique season and will most likely be harder to get as many points next season.

If we don't win the league, then I want him sacked.  ;)

Anywhere above the relegation places will do me thanks.Hopefully mid-table though, can't see why we can't make the top half though.

To stay up again. Survival is paramount if we want to establish ourselves properley. We can focus on progressing up the table after 3 ish seasons

To stay up again would be what we should be aiming for, but it would be great if we could finished somewhere like 14th or 15th.

More of the same, we havent been in the relegation zone for much of this season at all really. So hopefully more of the same and we can continue to be a PL team for years to come. With Roy, i fully believe we can. I like the fact that with Roy, its very much if you can win it, dont lose it.

oh and one or two more clean sheets  ;D

happy to fly under the radar next year, maybe a decent cup run, could do with a quiet, relaxing Easter after 10 years of heartstopping season ends... might be a bit boring though...?

This. Too many teams have messed up the second season and ended up relegated

I think we all agree that this squad is the best we have had for many a year. Our aims next year will depend on who we add to it and who we lose.

People are quite sensible saying safety iss the priority.

Bob Paisley always said getting enough points to avoid relegation was the first priority, you try and get them as quickly as possible, then you set other targets.

Fixtures,injuries,etc all have a say.

I'd simply like a season where we Beat the struggling Teams both Home & Away

and throw in the occasional good result against the Top few at Home

A safe stress free (well almost) midtable (8th-14th) finish :)

Personally I don't think 17th next season would be a good finish for us. The league isn't going to get any stronger, I think if anything its going to be weaker with the likes of QPR and Norwich coming up. We need to be looking to be consistently above the relegation battle all season, finishing somewhere between 9th-14th. Similar to the sort of season Fulham have had this year, and with Roy we have every chance of achieving that.

I was thinking this as well. The teams coming up this year aren't very special. Look at QPR.. a one man team, and Norwich you could kind of say with Grant Holt but he will get found out next season, saying that Norwich do have some decent players. If we get relegated next year with the teams coming up i will be very disappointed.

Exactly the same as this season.

The first aim is to get ourselves to forty points.

We can tehn come up with a second aim based on how long it has taken us to complete the first aim.

Agreed get 40 points on the board as soon as possible and then aim higher. Would be nice not to be involved in the relegation struggle at any point and a bit of a run in a cup would be the cherry on top.

If you look at how Wolves and Blues have struggled this season after being comfortable last season (both strengthened over the summer) we need to gaurd against 2nd season syndrome more than anything else.

Let hodgson bring in a RB, CB, CM, Winger, 2 Fw's .. hodgson with a whole pre season to sort the positioning out .. 14th would be best

second season syndrome is what we have to be aware of
