Tony Mowbray (Pre-2017 Speculation)
« on: September 14, 2014, 10:05:44 AM »
They say never go back, but I'm sitting in the Hawthorns longing for that attacking football, when we clapped them off most weeks despite Carson/Martis/Meite probably costing us points. We can't defend anyway but think of the difference in quality between our players then and now. The football we'd play would be a joy to watch.

I'd send out an SOS to Mowbray. Get him back and get a bit of beauty into the football we're watching get back a bit of matchday enjoyment. If Alan Irvine deserved a second chance Mowbray definitely does.

I know one thing, there won't be a standing ovation this May.

I second this. Under Mowbray we were by far the most attacking and entertaining I have ever seen us. I would love him back.

I'd back this. Loved the football under Mowbray.

I was going to start a thread asking "Who would replace Irvine should he go." Perhaps that should be merged here.

I still think we should try to get Jol in. His teams play great expansive football.

The brand of football was superb under Mowbray....
I'd love to see that style now, entertaining football is what
I'd pay to see....
The dross we've served up the last few years ain't worth putting your hand
in your pocket for.
The opportunity was there in the summer to get rid of the dead wood throughout
the club , but bad choices have green made.

Can't see Mowbray returning but would  want some free flowing please.

Here's a left field thought for the hat, if we're to stick to the head coach and not manager approach what about an albion set up, Craig Shakespeare as head coach David Kelly as assistant coach and Kevin Philips as the other coach

Can we not try and replace Irvine before the time comes please with suggestions. Its disrespectful and not something we as a forum are going to encourage.

If/ when the time comes then its fair game but for now its not.

The writing is already on the wall. Certainly can't be disrespectful to someone who has done nothing to earn my respect in the first place.

Think we're at a stage where discussing possible replacements is valid? Mowbray won't be coming back, it's just wishful thinking on my part.

Sorry but as a forum we will not be allowing topics suggesting other coaches.

Appreciate this is just wishful thinking but other topics and posts where suggestions are made will be judged on a post by post basis and removed if we see fit. Its something we have done with other coaches and will continue to do.

I don't want him back! We went down with him might be attractive football but it wasn't winning football

Personnel. We didn't have the quality to outplay sides. We have now. We were 3 - 0  up against Spurs 4 months ago.

:D At the moment I am also hoping the topic will be fair game soon.

Not sure about Mowbray though, like Peace in the Summer with our club he had lessons to learn to progress in management as his side couldn't defend. At the moment we can't defend either.

Yes please but he would probably fail in the 6 week long due dilegance process.

Have to giggle,  can not accept a man who has deemed to have failed at Sheff W and Preston and want to bring in a man whose record at Celtic and Boro is not exactly inspirational.  Football is a funny old game.

But we have a direct point of reference. He was superb for us. Irvine hasn't been superb for ANYONE.

Failed miserably at Celtic and at Middlesbrough too. Can't organise a defence to save his life.

Ha! I laugh but it's true.

The club love talking the talk about their due diligence process, but when it comes to walking the walk they appoint Alan Irvine.

The players enjoy training though so it's all good.

I think some people are looking back with rose coloured glasses. We may have won games...but which league were we in at the time? And what happened in his final season?

In the 21 years I've been going to the Albion with my dad, Albion have gone from an average division 2 promoted side who almost got relegated back into that league, to a half decent PL team with several ups and downs in the meant time. Mowbray may have brought a good element of football during his time, but it needs to be noted that much of his spell was spent in the Championship, not the PL.

There's no doubt AI is well out of his depth, but going backwards won't solve anything.

Not true mate. I haven't even considered his Championship seasons. We played good football in the top division. Standing ovation when relegated says it all.

Agree he would have to learn from his mistakes like anyone.

Mowbray played great in championship.  If he'd have stuck Mulumbu in defensive midfield with Valero instead of Greening we'd have been on to something.  We had a Carson the clown though and some terrible defenders
