"my club " v " the club I choose to support"
« on: August 07, 2013, 12:47:05 PM »
After reading many posts on this forum , I have come to the conclusion that many are overhyping their input or effect on West Bromwich Albion.
Whilst I am sure we all would like the club/team to progress , it would appear that many still think they have a "right " to question the business decisions made and the "funding" of transfer targets?
Some have even suggested along the lines that we should "just pay the 6m" for Sinclair", or questioned where the money has gone .
Im not an happy clapper , I am not Jeremy Peace , but I do understand my very small part in the big business jigsaw that is WBA, I don't think it makes me any less of a fan in fact I think it helps manage my expectation , I just wish people would stop acting like the club/team/chairman owes them something , this is the real world not football manager .

The club is run very very well. If/when we are relegated (all it takes is a perfect storm of rubbish issues and it'll happen) we will be in perfect shape to come back up.

People wanting us to throw money we've not got (so thus would have to borrow) at players have no concept at all of the business behind football. It's a computer game to them, or simply bragging rights.

The club wouldn't exist without us, so in a very real sense it is ours and i respect the right of people to question stuff, especially on here, afterall it is a fans forum. What I am puzzled by is the same people making the same exclamations time and again. When people explain things to them and it doesn't seem to sink in.

I think i'm right in saying Albion have a better average finish over the last three seasons than any other club that isn't bankrolled by a billionaire owner (and indeed have finished above several that do)

If the club listened to the "just throw £6mill at him" crowd we'd be with the likes of Coventry and Wolves before long. You only need 1 or 2 gambles on borrowed money to go wrong before you're totally screwed.

I think alot of it comes down to certain sections of our support not being particually reasoned or insightful. They want us to splash the cash just to make them feel good.

I'd much rather have Anelka "on a free" then have just signed that lad Gayle that Palace have picked up for £4.5-7.5mill (he cost peterborough £500k 6 months earlier) Yet in that example I bet you'd hear a fair few happy that we've spent some money, almost regardless of who on.

Leave the finances and transfers to the Pros, they've got us here, they've earned our trust.

Whenever things look bad, remember the Port Vale, Grimsby and Walsall days... not so bad now, eh?!

None really, just amused me  :)

I agree with the original post. We're in really good hands with JP and although it's frustrating at times (I wish the transfers would get done quicker) we have to trust in him as he's lead us so well up until now.
Allllllll aboard

I understand your points, for some the only happiness is in spending money.

However, I do think SOME money should be spent. This year the TV money has gone up massively. We could easily spend 10% of this (£5 mill?) on a quality player. I don't think this is unreasonable and could easily be afforded.

Basically, there's no reason why you should stupidly spend money which we will never do. However, we shouldn't be afraid of spending a little every now and then. My gripe with Peace is that he views players purely for what he paid for them. I.e. xx cost £3 million and left on a free. He doesn't seem to take into account that xx may have played a good role in the team and justified this £3 million fee?

So whilst I do agree with peace generally, I do think his no fee policy goes a bit overboard at times.

Is that including his wage? if that's the case then Kalou is near enough 10 percent at 4.6 million (2.6 fee+ 2 in wages every year) Add the money spent on the training facilities and I's guess a large chunk had already been spent. Also, just asking but does Albion directly support the Albion foundation? or is that it's own autonomous thing?

I wasn't on about Kalou, I just meant as a one off fee, a signing of £5 million per season (with the rest being frees) is not much money these days.

Think people have the right to question what they like...its called freedom of speech...
They might be wrong.

For whats its worth i agree were probably spending as much /doing as much as we can.
Living in Norwich though it does sicken me to the teeth that they have spent nr 30mil this year and we still havent (or at least appear) not to be spending.

I understand the policy, i agree with the numbers,  i just dont like it.  zero growth.
The was a great article by Dan Ashworth in last years QPR programme about how much we need to spend just to gain a top 6 or 7 place.

I think people are understandably underwhelmed with our expectations as much as its a byproduct of the modern game.

Does that not get you down that in general that we finish 8th and we are generally talking about survival this year.

Its just so god damn depressing.

Thats why average joe Albion fan is so fed-up.

The relevance is that it just shows some fans total disregard for reality !! ::)
