Baggies Fans
« on: March 03, 2013, 03:47:31 PM »
Do we have the most miserable pessimistic fans in the Country?.
We are currently having our best season in about 30yrs and yet the moaning on this and other Baggie sites seems to get worse on a weekly basis.
All of the clubs in our area besides Walsall are in deep trouble and have genuine reasons to be fed up.
Is it a football fans lot to be miserable or are we just good at it.

We are no worse or better than fans of any other club in the country, even  Man Utd fans criticise things Fergie does, Celtic fans criticise Lennon.

You notice it more about Albion fans because you care and take more interest in the club than any other.

If you want to see proper miserable moaning go and have a look at the stokie clay heads on the oatcake board!
Don't spend too long on there though as you'll probably want to slash your wrists after a while!

Every club has them, I think overall we are not so bad really. Villa, Wolves, Stoke far worse than us.

I think thats due to expecation if we lost 1-0 to Chelsea under the RDM era then they would be a lot of praise for the team.

Dont think we will lose today as Swansea are not as good away from home and they havnt really got
anything to play for as they are already in Europe, with Lukaku and Odemwingie in the starting 11 Iam
feeling pretty confident.

Think most people who have rode the Albion Roller Coaster since 2001, I would think, won't overly moan about where we are because we have an understanding of where we have come from.

Anyone following the club since the early 80's until 2001 are pretty much in dream land

Any fan from the Johnny Giles era to the day Ron Atkinson left and took Robson and Moses with him, will always look back with Rose Tinted Glasses with a healthy chunk of realism because that era won't come again ..... where teams became top level, because of the quality, and attitude of players you managed to get ...... And not just buy, but develop.  Then being coached by a top manager could take you to the top.  The Baggies could have actually won the 1st Division ..... Don't think that'll happen again will it.

From the early 70's to Giles arriving we were always struggling and got relegated and played some average football under Don Howe ..... But

We just loved our team and took the lows with the very occasional highs.

Get real Guys ...... We would have grabbed the position we are in at the start of the season .... We have no Divine right to be near the top ..... We can't buy a team ..... But we're capable of beating them and that's us.

Quite right instant gratification is demanded by some fans ...... I'm afraid it ain't going to happen at the Hawthorns because of the infrastructure, business model we use .... and we moan mainly because we care .... But like clubs such as Norwich our fan base is local (in the main) and that makes us A CLUB ..... enjoy it and please, please enjoy your moment in the sun .... believe me it gets really cold sometimes

I don't think Albion fans are particularly bad but in general I think fans are getting less patient and there is a sense of entitlement which is present at all clubs. Fans feel that  they have the right to expect certain outcomes when they are playing against what they regard as lesser opposition, some of the most entertaining rants are those supporters of the likes of Chelsea when they have lost to us. Equally the tone on this board really goes sour when we stumble against a team we "ought" to beat.

Realistically fans can only expect the team give each game it's best shot if it goes well enjoy the moment and if does not move on. Take today's game for instance  two well matched teams played out a reasonably entertaining fixture and gave it their best neither set of fans could really complain almost regardless of the result.  Albion fans go home happy, whereas I would imagine some idiot is phoning Radio Swansea as I write this to tell the world that Laudrup has lost the plot.

I think its down to expectations of fans. Both clubs have had an excellent two years, so the expectations of the those fans will increase. We have done extremely well without spending serious money.

From Albionwarrior

" But like clubs such as Norwich our fan base is local (in the main) and that makes us A CLUB ..... enjoy it and please, please enjoy your moment in the sun .... believe me it gets really cold sometimes"

A very good point as although we have some very welcome friends and fans from all over the country and World as we see on here the majority are local supporters.
Unlike Man U Liverpool etc who are all over the country/World in numbers.

Pessimism? Well, first of all, most of you are English, so I'm afraid it's sort of genetic.  (I can say that since I'm half English.   ;)) I once heard about an American psychologist on the train from London to Gatwick, marveling at the misery of the English. "These are the most depressed people on earth." I don't really believe that, but I think it's amusing.

More importantly, sport fans world-over know that pessimism is, at root, a defense mechanism, a way to cope with the maddening tension of not being God Football.

Don't believe me? Watch the ending of Fever Pitch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCUE0freB3k

For me, that ending says it all.

Good point about the English we like a moan and it is partly a safety valve.
Unlike the Americans who expect to win and once the tide turns are at a loss as to how to stop it, The Ryder Cup being the perfect example  ;D ;).

I reckon we are miserable. Having the best season since about 1983 and STILL fans whinge about not expanding stadium- "we're not as big as Brighton, not enough fans" blah blah blah.

Bl00dy Hell! We might as well now aim to follow Wolves the way everyone goes on.... :P

We're no worse or better than every other supporter in this league.
Even Arsenal fans want their manager out after all he's done.

There are Stoke, Everton, Arsenal fans that will probably want there managers out. Think how much Pulis, Moyes and Wegner have done for those clubs.

The moaning from fans isn't that bad. Due to our early results this season expectations of fans will increase. I for one cant have any complaints with this team this season as they have been excellent for the vast majority of it.
