West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Karlan Grant
« on: November 09, 2024, 12:46:57 PM »
I really don't get what people see in Grant, apart from his workrate. But thats's more about tracking back, which in fairness, may have helped keep a few clean sheets. However, as a forward, he delivered one dangerous cross in the second half, but even for that, he didn't look up and aim for anyone in particular. I lose count of the times he just gets crowded out by trying to run through defenders. His one potent weapon is his right foot shot, but he never seems to work openings where it can be deployed.
That was one dangerous cross more than anyone else in that game other than maybe one swift put in from a free kick
Long term I’d like Johnston there also but hard work and effort also needs rewarding and he was unlucky with a couple of efforts being blocked
I’ve watched far worse players be selected on work rate by Pulis and megson so he deserves his place for me on merit at the moment

I feel like this game could be a turning point with a lot of fans if we fail to win, would like us to go with possibly the below.

                  Palmer

Furlong    Holgate   Heggem  Styles

              Mowatt    Molumby

Dobbin        Grant      Johnston

                  Maja

With so few options to go 3 at the back this is similar to how I would go
I would play diakite alongside molumby giving us some much needed legs in midfield and also allow our full backs more license to get forward
I’d be leaving grant on the left and maybe like you giving Johnston a chance in the free role or maybe even playing Cole alongside maja
But I’m expecting the same rigid formation with the likes of Racic,Wallace and diangana coming back in to start
Teams have sussed out that if they stop mowatt acting as a playmaker they negate most of our control of the game and mowatt himself has been poor the last 3 games

I hope he continues this form and more so the effort
I also hope he isn’t played elsewhere
He’s doing ok on the left and this allows his one trick of cutting in on his right to shoot to still be an option
No one else has played better in this position this season and his work rate is excellent
Johnston other than his goals last season was no better, I’d happily see Johnston pushed in to another position than grant at the moment
Keeps his place when fit on merit

Huddersfield were playing far better than we are at the moment and moved the ball with much more urgency and through the lines a lot quicker, pressing more aggressively.

I don’t believe we’re anywhere near thoughts of changing manager but it seems to me that he needs to try something new as goals have dried up both home and away, we were scoring away from home with ease before.

Should we be looking at more of a 4312 while attacking now? With Styles at LB he offers more of a threat on the overlap meaning we could then use Johnston slightly more inside which is where he enjoyed himself last season and a run is what he needs and let’s face it, Swift, Diangana and anyone else tried in that 10 role have not earned their spot.

Molumby, Mowatt and Racic could sit behind a free roaming Johnston. It does throw a conundrum of dropping Fellows however he is out of form, as is Maja so let’s support Maja with Grant or Cole.

We have to try something different but I don’t think we’ll shift from a back 4 even though Corberan has mentioned that possibility.
We are hamstrung regarding going to a back 3 as we have no more centre halves fit and the four fit are reasonably solid
Because we never change our rigid formation only the players within it we must be a dream for opposing managers to try to negate
Our central midfield options are all to similar as in no legs between any of them and very little creativity apart from safe 5 yard balls shuffling sideways
Mowatt was our quarter back first part of the season and teams get wise
Similar to Johnston and fellows teams know what they want to do
The fact we move the ball so slowly allows teams to double up on our wide men knowing we create so little through the middle hence we create so few chances now
Johnston, fellows and this season grant are effective wide men in this league but need support
Maja given chances and sometimes not given chances will score goals and also leads the line and links play well
Our major problem is the 3 in the middle
As we have both said no number 10 is warranting a place at the moment so I’d try diakite and molumby in the middle with an extra body up front be that Cole, dobbin or Johnston in a free role
Individually it’s harsh on mowatt
Racic hasn’t done enough to warrant starting but is neat and tidy from the bench
I am a swift fan but he isn’t doing enough in that 10 role at the moment to start
Ditto Grady and Wallace has done nowt this season
I’m not completely putting this on CC has we have no knowledge of who signed the players and what he asked for in the summer
The only thing I am putting at his door is the reluctance to at least try something different

I’ve mentioned many times on here CC did well at Huddersfield on the back of 1-0 wins with lots of set piece goals, you could argue a more slightly better watch than pulisball
I think he is naturally defensive manager
If we had been losing games he may have looked at changing the formation
Bea cause we are not losing and still around the top 6 I feel it will be more of the same with only personnel changes

Would have taken a draw but my god we are so hard to watch at the moment
Back four all good
Good save by palmer but my god learn to kick the ball
Mowatt and swift were really poor
It’s a recurring theme our number 10 being poor
Like many have said we need a change in formation
How about 4-4 bloody 2 if none of our 10s are playing well
Fellows did ok
Another good shift from Grant
Subs, Racic did nowt
Dobbin showed a few nice flashes he’s got to be getting close to getting a chance from the start
Diakite and molumby also in the middle

You feel a goal coming for them
Let’s see what Dobbin can do in 30 minutes

Our passing has been atrocious so far this half
Really lucky to still be level

So little creativity and movement
Swift and mowatt having poor games

Mowatt seems off the pace again
Would like to see diakite alongside molumby

Palmer scares me with the ball at his feet
Overall even half with both teams having moments but you have to say we have created very little again with Burnley looking the more likely to score
We do seem to be getting more players in the box though

Two good blocks to deny grant in quick succession
Better from Albion

Burnley on top

On bench 'Nelson', any ideas who?
Very highly rated right back.
Small quick and technically good, more of a modern right back
He has always stood out whenever I have watched the reserves

I’d argue over the course of a season Leeds, Sheff utd and Burnley have teams than us
I think you can put us in the same bracket has boro and Norwich who capable of beating anyone in this division on there day
Sunderland are massively over achieving
We lost our best defender and midfielder and reduced our wage bill
Saying all that when looking at our squad I think play offs should be expected and anything worse than that is a poor season

Whilst there are numerous issues Bartley/Ajayi doesn’t work but we may not see that again for a while, lack of creativity from a number 10/who to play there
I think ultimately we need to sort our centre mid out, the eng8ne room or lack of engine room
We have not replaced yokuslu like for like, mowatt is a decent player but my god he runs in treacle
If mowatt starts we have to play molumby or diakite to gives us some energy
Perhaps a molumby /diakite axis with mowatt in front would be worth a shout or even Racic
I think the signing of a more all round cdm is our priority it will prevent players coming so deep to get the ball pushing us further up the field

Personally I thought his marking for the goal was atrocious.
Played well overall
You could also argue Palmer might have done better and with most things tonight
Chong was the best player on the pitch tonight so a bit harsh on Holgate in my opinion

Did fairly well given the context. Begs the question why wingers have been favoured over him up until now?
He did ok tonight, agree seems odd he hasn’t had more minutes even if from the bench

He has credit in the bank but only so much.
I accepted megsons football and scrappy 1-0 wins because we had limited footballers who gave there all
However some of the ream selections are baffling to probably 95% of us
Diakite has been bombed out after a poor half at Sheff wed where the selection of him and Racic was odd
Mowett makes us tick but can’t run so needs molumby next to him
The selection of diangana and Wallace or coming from the bench continually when neither has done anything all season says a lot about cc opinion of Dobbin
I’d like to see styles in midfield or at least given a chance
Cole hardly getting a look in when we have no other striker is odd
I’m hoping a scrappy win is around the corner which may give us a boost in confidence because our overall displays recently are bottom half
He deserves time to try and change things if he starts picking players on performances not past reputations

I’d have taken a point beforehand, but a dreadful performance and game of football generally
I think our back four stood up to the long balls well
Mowatt/Racic doesn’t work it has to be molumby alongside mowatt who had a really poor night
Wallace and diangana were anonymous Wallace chased around like a headless chicken he’s lost through the middle
Good goal from maja with little to no service and support
Grant played well, well he tried at least
Palmer looked shaky again and his distribution is has bad has johnstones was who bloody trains our goalies
Cole did enough in his 20 minutes to show he warrants a place on the bench with no other striker available and Johnston looked bright when he came on
A tough run of games which may lead to more criticism of cc if we drop out of the top 6
I’d have liked to have seen the Cole/ maja partnership for more than 5 minutes

Not seeing anything good from Racic today
I think overall he did ok, better than the undroppable mowatt
