As a Canadian born and raised, my English friend got me into football 12 years ago.  He was obviously a lifelong Baggies fan who visited the Hawthorns often as a kid growing up and thus my attachement to the club.  It didn't hurt that the first match I ever watched was a 3 to 2 away victory against Arsenal way back in 2010.

As a Canadian it's easy to have a 2nd or 3rd team to cheer for because haven't made the world cup for 3 decades so we always had to find another nation to cheer for.  I assume it's all England all the time and we don't care about anyone else for most English fans..lol.

I will be cheering for England because of my good friend.  Our beer league soccer team also has a spanish guy who's a really good guy on it, so I will cheer for Spain because of our friendship.  I lived in Germany for a year in my youth, so I still have a soft spot for the Germans although I know that won't go over well on this forum..lol.

So I ask you, in the group phase of the world cup, what teams will you be rooting for when England doesn't play?  We're a massive underdog and easy to cheer for.  I welcome anyone who wants to cheer on Canada.  It comes with low expectations so there won't be much disappointment if we don't fair well!

Tailor made for Ted Lasso

I'll throw out the Ted Lasso suggestion.  Canadian national team manager John Herdman would be a brilliant hire.  Completely out of the box.  It was near impossible to predict the starting 11 through qualifying, because our team was so flexible tactically.  We would change formations mid game let alone game to game. The players talk about how prepared and well drilled they are for each opponent and how the attention to detail is very different from previous national team managers.

I look at the Canadian side that beat the US in qualifying without Alphonso Davies and Stephen Eustaquio who has started the last 7 for FC Porto.  2 of our best players for a country without a lot of depth and the US generated one shot from open play in that match.  He has been rumoured to have had interest from England and there's no way he would abandon Canada so he wouldn't be available until after the world cup, but he is a great football mind and a born leader of men.

I also think his first bit of business would be to get 20 year old Ismael Kone who almost joined Norwrich and Sheffield United in the summer window.  A 20 year technically gifted 6'2 box to box number 8 with well above average pace and size who only lacks experience.
https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1574892631821234178?s=20&t=R_O87aKE1TrcLYTCfzPi0A

I know this hire will never happen.  A hire like this would likely be met very unfavourably by the fanbase until the wins started piling up.

Livermore over the bar.

Keep the updates coming.  I couldn't get a stream to watch this one in Canada.

The manager isn’t good enough.

Nothing else matters until this is solved.

Chicken or the egg?  Mowatt, Livermore, Townsend.   Don't absolve the players.  The players are playing their part too.

What the hell did Val have to do with that?

Blaming the manager for a mistake by Johnstone?  Mangers stop going over that scenario when kids turn 11.

Hoilett, remember him, is set to come on for Reading

I've seen Hoilett quite a bit because I'm from Canada and he played most of the gold cup in summer and has featured in our early WCQ.   He's been out for over a month with injury..this is his first match back.  I'm glad he didn't do anything special today though!

Probably, but given the mood going into this game I'm happy to see anything positive! Even if he cost us a yellow, his passing is a lot sharper than some out there

2 to Nil!  I'm in a great mood myself.  As a Canadian I don't get to watch many matches.  I can usually find a good stream for the early match. The early game starts at 6:30 AM where I live in Canada.  The wife and kid are asleep.  Morning coffee.  Quite house.  Albion up by 2 at half.  It's  a pretty good start the the day.

Mowett having a stinker, I wonder if the pressure on Val is rubbing off on him too.

Gardner-Hickman  very composed and full of energy!

And we nearly score an OG :o

I think you're being a bit kind to Gardner-Hickman.  Mowett had to take the yellow because of his mistake.  Hickman's brought a bit of energy and promise at times, but he's looked like a 19 year old at times too.  That's fine.  You only learn by playing.

Sitter missed Gardner-Hickman.

i'm still not sure how he got through.  Seemed like that was the hard part.  It's a shame he couldn't find the back of the net.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Jordan Hugill loan ended
« on: August 25, 2021, 03:38:53 PM »
The strength of this signing depends upon if we sign a first choice striker before the window closes.

I like Hugill and think he will do a good job for us. He is a that and works hard. He is a plan B through his height. Long throws will suit him.

However, if that is our only striker signing this window, I will be pretty unhappy .. we need a mobile, quick player/striker to stretch games and get in behind. Grant did it twice on Saturday and we scored two goals as a result.

Or the other point is whether this frees up cash for a quality midfielder.

Too early to criticise yet but this is a solid signing IF others are to follow. I am disappointed by another loan given the comments by Ken about loans being the problem in the past. However, let us see on 1/9/21

I always like to promote the Canadian lads.  If you're talking quality midfielder, Stephen Eustaquio is seemingly stuck in purgatory with Pacos de Ferreira.  He was man of the match against Tottenham in their 1 to 0 victory.  His level is so much higher than most of the players at Pacos.  I'm not sure what this kid has to do to get noticed.  He can probably be had for 5 mil Euro.  He would be an absolute steal for so many clubs.

I can tell you fans in Canada were pretty excited for Alphonso Davies.  To think that Swansea could have had him in 2017 for 3 million pounds, but he was denied a work permit because the fees and wages on the offer were too low.

I was 11 when the 86 world cup took place so it's a distant memory.  I have high hopes that I will one day get to the Hawthorns.

I hope it all works out for you. It's a fantastic event to be involved in even though we always fail at the knockouts.

Can i ask why you chose to support the mighty WBA out of interest?

My wife works with a lifelong Baggies fan who now lives in Canada permanently.  I'm a big sports fan, but hadn't watched a lot of football.  Believe it or not, the first West brom match I ever watched was the 3 to 2 victory against Arsenal.  I was pretty much hooked.  I know most West Brom fans aren't big Peter Odemwinge fans, but for me he's probably my favourite player watching over the last decade.  He was just so dynamic and dangerous on the pitch that first year I watched.  Pete and Olsson were my favourites.  Olsson compete level on all the aerial battles in the box.  He was just a beast that first year.

I've just followed ever since.  I was able watch at least half of the matches on TV here when they were in the premiership.  The other ones I caught on line.

I started following the national team more as I got into football.  The quality of the Canadian national team 10 years ago was dreadful.  Today, outside of couple of emerging stars like Davies and David, the team has so many under 24 players.  Many of these players are getting starts.  We really do have a realistic chance of getting out of Concacaf.  The change in qualifying rules for Concacaf and Covid might hurt us for 2022, but I'm still hopeful.

Cursed it 4 2

As a Canadian I can't help but cheer for Bayern.  Alphonso Davies is the best football player Canada has ever had by miles.  Our second best player ever might be Jonathan David who just won the goal scoring title in Belgium.  We are a country that just wants to qualify for the world cup having only made it once.  With a 19 year old Alphonso Davies and a 20 year old Jonathan David there's hope for the future!

Holgate with a decent effort.

Holgate made a fantastic strike from outside the box.  It looked like it just cleared the bar.

I watched Rooney's first appearance with DC United, only because they were playing the Whitecaps who feature the great Canadian hope Alphonso Davies!  The Whitecaps lost but Davies scored and unbelievable goal.

Congrats to Davies on his transfer to Bayern yesterday!  At 17 Davies broke the MLS transfer record.  Hope he does well in Europe!

Should definitely not be made available for loan.

I'd love to get Cyle Larin in return with any dealings with Besiktas.  As a Canadian fan, I would love to have a Canadian on the Baggies!  At 23 Larin has a lot of upside and a low price tag.

Poor. Likelihood of scoring went from slim to none when Rondon got injured. Toothless.

I'm not sure how it was possible for Rondon not to find the back of the net on the Rodriguez cross.

Woeful. All that mattered today was a result.

Team selection abysmal and downhill from there.

there is no good team selection.  The squad isn't good enough.  The team is lost with both Chadli and Morrison out.

Triple sub made to basically give us the set up we should have started with...

Why is Chadli not on the pitch?

Which part is untrue though?

It's not untrue.  It was a fantastic goal.  The problem is if you get out chanced 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 you're more likely to have a defensive blunder or get beat by a true bit of quality by the other team.  There's no reason why the team is set up so negatively against a side like this.

Huddersfield has had some bad touches in the middle of the pitch and retained possession.  This is the area of the pitch that you should be penalized for mistakes, but our players are playing so far off and already retreating and conceding possession in the middle of the pitch where they should be fighting to create turnovers and create chances.  I don't see the point in bringing Krychowiak if this is the way your are going to play.

The play was not terrible given the opposition, but we don't adjust when we play the bottom teams.  They take it to Albion too.

Burke is going to rot on the bench under Pulis.  He's a young player that needs time.  He will make mistakes, but he will learn.

Rodriguez can not play wide, but he does show some finishing prowess.  Could you image having the pace of Burke, and Phillips on the field at the same time with a player with some creativity of Chadli playing at the 10.   Rodriguez might actually get some space and opportunities up front if we had some pace on the wings and some creativity behind him.  You can even start Brunt and bring Burke off the bench.  This is how I would like to see the team set up against the bottom of the table, but it's never going to happen under Pulis.  Gibbs can offer much to a team with attacking intent as well. It's frustrating.

It's tough to get a lot of enjoyment watching this team with Pulis in charge.
