West Bromwich Albion FC / 11th, 10th, 8th - what next?
« on: May 21, 2013, 04:43:57 PM »
Following an unprecedented three consecutive seasons in the Premier League (modern era) and the 11th, 10th, and 8th position finishes respectively, what next?

What would constitute a good or successful season in the 2013/2014 campaign?

Personally I'm under no illusions as to how difficult it will be next year, and while I'm quietly confident about our prospects I also don't think we can take our Premier League status for granted. Just look at the Dingles. Doesn't seem 5 minutes since we thrased them 5-1 at Molineux and now they are in League One.

I'm not overly concerned about our league position next season but I would really like it if we could finnish above the Villa again (would be 3rd consecutive season as the top dogs in the Midlands) and to finally break the 50 point mark would be nice too.

We started our Premiership journey with a trip to Old Trafford with little to no expectations.

It was our first time back in the top-flight for 16 years and this was our line-up on that day;

Quote
R Hoult
P Gilchrist
D Moore
L Sigurdsson
N Clement
A Johnson
S Gregan (B Taylor, 83)
D McInnes
I Balis
J Roberts (L Marshall, 69)
D Dichio (S Dobie, 60)
Subs not used: R Wallwork, B Jensen

You don't need me to give you a history lesson but since 2002 it's pretty much been like this...

Promotion, Relegation, Promotion, Survival, Relegation, Play-Off Final Defeat, Promotion, Relegation, Promotion, Survival, Survival

As amazing as the 2004-2005 survival was (The Great Escape) with all the drama, being the first team to stay up being bottom at Christmas, final day win over Portsmouth not knowing whether it would be enough listening to other matches on the radio...really we only stayed up due to an incredible amount of luck and ultimately we were relegated the next season anyway.

Staying up in the 2010-2011 season felt like we finally belonged in the league and deserved it. We followed this up by a 10th place finish last year.

Now after our great 7 points from the first three games this campaign and our strong squad we are really really starting to look like an established Premier League side, and slowly but surely we are getting rid of that "Yo-Yo team" tag. We may not be part of the furniture yet but we're getting there!

I can't believe that was our Premier League line up for the first game of the season in 2002 especially considering our squad now and the strength in depth we have.

It makes you wonder where will we be in another 10 years time?

thoughts?

Watching the Eng-Wales game last night I only just realised that the Welsh squad isn't actually very Welsh.

BORN IN ENGLAND
Danny Collins
Ashley Williams
Jack Collison
Andrew Crofts
Andy King
Simon Church
Steve Morrison
Hal Robson-Kanu
Sam Vokes

And Boaz Myhill was born in America, and Robert Earnshaw was born in Zambia

&

Scotland - James Morrison, Phil Bardsley

Republic of Ireland - Simon Cox, Liam Lawrence, Kevin Foley and a few others

Got me thinking. Have we (England) ever missed out on any GREAT players who opted to play for someone else?

West Bromwich Albion FC / 11th

Slightly frustrating to know that 3 points today would have took us to 8th place, but I'm not complaining.

If people had said to me this time last year that we would finnish 11th in the Premierleague I'd have laughed at them. Just shows how well we have done.

* Joint 10th in the Premiership, as a newly promoted team
* Memorable wins over Arsenal, Villa, Liverpool etc
* Broke all sorts of our PL records including wins, goals scored etc

This is the best league position that we have finnished in my lifetime.

GREAT GREAT season. Bring on next season!

Has anyone got the MP3 version of The Liquidator on the westbrom.com homepage they can upload?

(I want to download it for my ringtone)

I believe it was recorded against Crystal Palace in our 2002 promotion game?

Thanks in advance

For the last 12 years or so we have either been involved in a promotion race, or a relegation battle.

Add a few decent FA Cup runs into the mix (Quarter-Finals in 2002 and Semi-Finals in 2008), the fact we never seem to do things the easy way, and other contributing factors to being a Baggie makes us arguably one of the most exciting/interesting teams to support.

With no billionaire investor pumping their cash into the club, we are never going to challenge the elite for top honours, so the best we can realistically hope for is mid-table obscurity and the hope we may have a decent cup run each season.

With that in mind, are you worried we will end up becoming a 'boring' mid table team with nothing to play for?

2009/2010 - 2nd (Championship)
2008/2009 - 20th (Premier League)
2007/2008 - 1st (Championship)
2006/2007 - 4th (Championship)
2005/2006 - 19th (Premier League)
2004/2005 - 17th (Premier League)
2003/2004 - 2nd (Division One)
2002/2003 - 19th (Premier League)
2001/2002 - 2nd (Division One)
2000/2001 - 6th (Division One)
1999/2000 - 21st (Divison One)

West Bromwich Albion FC / "3 games to go" thing
« on: May 01, 2011, 12:40:09 AM »
Last season we secured promotion at Doncaster, with 3 games to go.

VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJopYTQB7n8

Now today's win looks like it has secured us Premier League survival, with 3 games to go.

Would you like Roy to experiment majorly with players/formations/tactics/systems in the last games, to try and get a better understanding of what exactly he needs to do in the summer (transfer market), or should we just carry on as usual?

Aston Villa 1 - West Bromwich Albion 1

Yes, THAT Paul Robinson header in the 90th minute.

I know we haven't had much to shout about over Villa in recent years, but I think we should all re-live this moment ahead of the game on Saturday.

Can't believe it's been 6 years since this game I can remember it like it was yesterday. Imagine if we had consolidated in the Premiership after that great escape season, where could we be by now?

They have two games before they play us...

26 APRIL
Stoke v Wolves

01 MAY
Birmingham v Wolves

Wolves v WBA will be their 36th game, and have two games remaining after that.

So after our game on May 8th, the team in 17th place needs to be 7 points clear of them to make it 100% sure that an Albion win at the custard bowl will relegate them.

At the moment they are only 1 point away from 17th...so it IS possible providing they lose to Stoke and Blues, and then we put the final nail in their coffin on May 8th....+ a mixture of other results going the right way.

What you reckon? Possible? Likely?

It would be AMAZING to relegate them in their own backyard. Would even surpass the pipping them to promotion season 2001/2002.....and beating them four times in a season (2006/2007)

Does anyone have any really good links/stats that provide any sort of accurate "most successful English football teams of all-time" lists? As it's interesting to know.

Also if anyone has a link to the all time top division table (not just premierleague era) then that would be great too.

thanks  8)

West Bromwich Albion FC / Record Breaking (Premier League) Season
« on: April 09, 2011, 05:44:46 PM »
I'm just trying to think of all the things we have achieved this season, that we haven't managed in any other Premier League season. Or stuff that we've managed to beat/surpass. (since our first promotion in 2002)

POINTS:

This season is already our best season in terms of points, as we currently have 39, which beats the 34 points we got in the 04/05 'great escape' season. With 6 games to play it will most likely be the first time we have hit the 40 point mark too.

Quote
08/09 - 32 pts
(20th)

05/06 - 30 pts
(19th)

04/05 - 34 pts
(17th)

02/03 - 26 pts
(19th)

GOALS SCORED:

This season is our best season in terms of amount of goals scored. We have currently scored 46, which beats our previous best (of 36 goals) and with many more still to come, I hope.

Quote
08/09 - 36 goals
05/06 - 31 goals
04/05 - 36 goals
02/03 - 29 goals

NO. OF GAMES WON

We have won 10 Premier League game so far this season, beating our record of 8 in the 2008/09 season

Quote
08/09 -  8 wins
05/06 - 7 wins
04/05 - 6 wins
02/03 - 6 wins

We have also...

Beat Arsenal
Beat Liverpool

Odemwingie is 1 goal away from being our highest ever Premier League goalscorer (Earnshaw scored 11 in 04/05)

Feel free to say the stuff I'm missing, I'm sure there is more...

West Bromwich Albion FC / What is the point in buying new kits?
« on: February 24, 2011, 02:42:44 PM »
Just before the season starts you'll be paying £49.99 just for the shirt. + extra if you want to add a name on the back, and number.

But in February they reduce it to £11.99? When the season doesn't end until May, and the next season doesn't start until August.

http://www.wba.co.uk/page/News/0,,10366~2299137,00.html

I never buy new shirts until they are reduced, for this very reason. Who's with me?

19
West Bromwich Albion FC / Who is our actual 'bogey team' ?
« on: February 21, 2011, 06:20:51 PM »
Which team do we have the absoloute worst record against?

A lot of people may think Stoke are our bogey team as we never seem to beat them, but looking at the head-to-head on Soccerbase.com,

WBA Wins - 41
Stoke Wins - 55
Draws - 32

Against Liverpool, our record reads:

Played: 134
Won: 34
Lost: 62
(38 games were Drawn)

Surely we must have a lot worse records than that against other teams?

Any ideas?
