Selling mistakes
« on: July 20, 2014, 10:50:12 AM »
Number of people seem to think that letting Thorne go to Derby is a mistake.  Out of interest can you think of any other players we have sold down the chain that have gone on to better themselves? I recall names of kids we have released but nobody immediately springs to mind.

Bryan Robson, Remi Moses. Maybe we had no choice but still a harsh blow

Gera did well at Fulham. Also half of Hull's squad seem to be ex WBA and they comfortably finished above us last season!  :o

Koren was on the bench most of it,
Davies  we got 10mil for, happy days
McShane isn't favoured by the fans because he's average at best
Long scored a couple like he did for us, but the league has found him out.

Yacob, Mulumbu, Dorrans, Morrison > Koren
Olsson, Lescott > Davies
Anyone > McShane
Berahino, Ideye > Long

I thought the exclamation mark and  :o face might have shown that this was jocular suggestion.

Since 2000 the only player that I  have regretted selling was Curtis Davies and in truth that was only since he was one of Hull's stand out players last season. However like Thorne the player gave us very little choice but to sell him. We didn't make a decision to sell Gera he let his contract run down.

I thought we might have made a mistake in selling Wood when we did but he seems to have tailed off after a promising start at Leicester. In truth there have been very few mistakes if anything the purchasing clubs are the ones that made the mistake.

Controversially, Odemwingie.

Sounds like a lot goes on behind the scenes that a volatile character could over amp (as he did). So not so much us selling him, but the consequences surrounding him leaving we could have done better with. Missed his goals.

dont ask me to choose luv

Agree with that , as i said at the time we missed the player but not the person.

Who?

Valero I'm guessing.... Just signed for 5 extra years at Florentina I read last week. Very good player, b ut brought here at wrong time to do the wrong job.
Whenever things look bad, remember the Port Vale, Grimsby and Walsall days... not so bad now, eh?!

Danny Gabbidon.

Gary Megson selling him at 21 after just 20 or so league appearances didn't turn out too clever. he went on to make over 300 appearances for Cardiff, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

We haven't had a good right back since....and still don't !

Most of Gabbidon's 300+ appearances for those clubs were at centre half though.

Williams, done very well at Swansea.

The only other one is Gabbidon, all the rest we had little choice about.

Arguably most of those mentioned (sensibly  ;)) so far went up the chain rather than down with exception of maybe Gabbidon who has had a decent career without really pulling up trees.

To be fair if we didn't sell Gabbidon we couldn't afford to bring in those 4 or 5 players (Taylor , Butler , Lyttle) who kept us up and helped turn the club around.

Very true, but the opening post said sold down.
Burrows to Liverpool and Palmer to Sheff Wed whom I believe were both above us.
If so, they were both sold up.

I always liked Jason Roberts, sold to Wigan, who at the time were doing ok. Also enzo Maresca has certainly gone on to better things. Mind you, his transfer fee came in handy at the time.
