I have some sympathy with Mowbray and his team selection.:

Diakite played well midweek but playing in the middle of a three is different to playing in a two where, being the home side, we probably play a little higher up the pitch. That means that Price plays right back; he has been playing fairly well as a right wing-back and with Molumby in front of him playing fairly narrow and us wanting to take the game to Hull, Mowbray likely hoped he'd be operating in similar areas.

Swift in central midfield has proven fruitful in some games and with more balls into the final third than any other player yesterday (he only played 62mins), means he probably did his job. I actually though Molumby from the right played well; he provided bite to support Mowatt and Swift as well as supporting Price. Up top, Grant played well vs Burnley, it would have been harsh to have dropped him plus he probably played his best football of the season up top with Maja, Mowbray isn't crazy for wanting to see if he could get something going with Armstrong.

In the cold light of day, a big man up top with Armstrong, Fellows wide right amongst other selections sound sensible and maybe would have been better but I don't think the team selected is as bad as is being made out. There was some logic behind it.

Overall a frustrating game, we were probably slightly better overall than it felt initislly post-game. Our lack of creativity is such a concern, perhaps Armstrong playing off of a Lankshear or a Dike is something that we need to explore.

Finally, shout out to Bartley and Holgate for two of the stupidest pieces of play I've seen in a while: Bartley's ridiculous shot from 30 yards which went out for a throw and Holgate trying to chest the ball down into the path of Bartley when the ball was in the air for an age, giving Hull the chance where Wildsmith saved one on one. A header up the field would have been fine Mason.

I support this move although in reality, it is going into places where people mostly stand away. In time a standing section in the Brummie would also be good I think.

I think we will see Diakite in for Mowatt and Diangana in for Fellows. Potentially Grant for Johnston too if he is fit.

What is needed is Furlong or someone to overlap the full back then he gets the cross in. The same can be said for Johnson, there are times when Stiles needs to overlap.

I agree this would be helpful fot Johnston but actually, for Fellows, this would be a bad move. We need to provide him the space to get to the byline. We need to leave him isolated 1v1. What's happening currently is that he is getting doubled up on, we need to take that second person away for him or he needs to let the ball go at the right time to someone who, in theory, should be free.

Furlong isn't a good one on one defender and now we are playing more openly, is getting exposed. Under the Corberan system, he had a specific role which got the best out of him which is why he hasn't looked as good, in my opinion. Still overall a decent right back for the level.

I was concerned with what I saw on Saturday, I felt we were just far too open with no structure at the back and I felt the same again tonight. Somewhat controversial but I quite like controlled, positional, possession football and wondered if after a couple of years of Corberan, I just needed time to adjust to a more care-free style...the jury is still out.

What's concerning for me is that we don't look well coached, almost like the players are on the pitch but we aren't well drilled out of possession or implementing any particular patterns of play with the ball.

However it is far too early and we have seen enough from Mowbray over his career to know that he is a decent manager. He'll still be learning about his players and will be looking for the best combination.

I do worry about us at the back; we are weaker in goal, Furlong isn't a good one v one defender so looks vulnerable with a more open style, Styles has never been a strong defender and as stated elsewhere, I'm no fan of Holgate as a centre back.

In midfield I think we have a workable combination in there, I do think that playing as open as we are certainly does not suit Mowatt in the pivot as he just isn't mobile enough; Price deeper with Mowatt more advanced or Diakite in there feels like something that may have more joy.

Going forward we have some options, we will find something that works; if theres a concern it would be around creativity, I'd love to see Maja with Armstrong eventually. I think Mowbray has been a bit hasty with his subs, for example Johnston and Fellows off at the same time tonight so early felt rash.

There'll be ups and downs between now and the end of the season, although we have not been great under Mowbray yet, I'm still hopeful of making the play-offs.

With the midfield and forward options available now, it is hard to know how we will setup. Personally, i'd like us to go 433 however unsure if we would be able to reconfigure our off the ball structure (442) to suit.

I think if you directly compare the squad from pre-January and post, you'd say overall we are stronger. Whilst we may be slightly weaker for replacing Palmer with Griffiths, we are stronger up front and surely Price is a better option than Racic so midfield is better too.

I think a decent window for the long term, two promising players brought in and the pathway opened for Griffiths. Although Armstrong is a win-now move, I do wonder how effective this squad will be. It looks a little muddled stylistically and bloated in offensive positions. I do worry whether wr have one too many players that know they won't play and will be negative around the place, which can be tough to manage.

Glad get a convincing win, but let's not get carried away. One of the worst teams away from home in the division and they rested half the team for a more winnable game Tuesday.

Agreed and their goalkeeper was poor for three of the goals too.

I expect he thinks we will have a lot of the ball so wants as many players in there that are comfortable on it. On the ball, I expect Mowatt to be deepest with Diangana and Swift as two free 8s and Wallace up top. One or both of the full backs could invert with Mowatt to give some protection.

Really interested in how we setup for this one particularly how Mowbray seeks to solve the centre forward issue and whether he might change/tweak the shape.

Unsure what I would do if I was in charge; if he wasn't in such bad form, I think I'd have previously been tempted by Swift as a 'false 9' centre forward who could link the play a little like Maja. I'd look to play a midfield 3 which would give us numbers flooding the box when we get it wide. I would like Diakite in, I think if he sits as a deep ball winner, we can enable our full backs to get forward and in the box. The wingers would have to stay high and maybe threaten in behind. I'd also like to see Taylor for Holgate although not having seen Holgate, that feels risky.

Palmer

Furlong
Taylor
Heggem
Styles

Diakite
Molumby
Mowatt

Fellows
Swift
Johnston

Having said all of the above, I'm not sure i'd trust Swift in current form! if he was playing better, the above is what I would do.

People aren't going to like this but with Maja out, we don't have anyone who can link the play apart from Jon Swift. I'd play him as the 10 but instruct him to stay high.

No Frabotta even on bench?

He is on the bench.

Personally think this lineup is far too lightweight in midfield, at least one of Molumby or Diakite should have been in there. As a result and with who I consider to be our weakest centre back option alongside him, think this could be a tough introduction for Taylor.

As others have said, stronger than perhaps expected, let's hope we can progress to the next round!

I'd play our best team here but wouldn't risk anyone with a slight knock like you might in a league game. I would be interested in seeing if a midfield three would work although fear Maja would be too isolated, maybe something like:

Palmer

Furlong
Bartley
Heggem
Styles

Molumby
Diakite
Mowatt

Fellows
Maja
Grant

Dobbin and McNair depart with Taylor back in which leaves us looking like this:

GK: Palmer, Wildsmith
RB: Furlong, Holgate
LB: Styles, Frabotta
CB: Bartley, Heggem, Taylor, Ajayi
CM: Mowatt, Molumby, Diakite, Racic
RM: Fellows, Wallace
AM: Swift, Diangana
LM: Johnston, Grant
CF: Maja, Cole, Dike

In terms of numbers in the squad, we are probably and attacking midfielder/wide player short, otherwise, that's our lot. Of course we hopefully look to move a one or two out that aren't contributing and replace them with players that will.

We are obviously not privy to everything that's going on but seemingly no one does with no one dominating the betting markets currently. Only the usual suspects, Heitinga aside, are being mentioned. Out of all of them, my preference would be Steve Cooper. You can argue that he has had success everywhere he has been and has a track record of developing youth which, with our finances, will be important. His style of play wouldn't be too much of jump from how we have played in the last couple of years so should be able to get things going fairly early on.

Hard to predict the team for this one, will they keep some continuity or will it be more wholesale changes to keep it fresh with half and eye on a more winnable game on New Year's day at home to Preston?

Personally I think we do need some fresh legs and would pick a team with some of our best athletes in, that would include Grant, Styles, Diakite and Molumby. Maybe something like:

Palmer

Furlong
Holgate (would prefer McNair but expect that's not an option)
Bartley
Heggem
Styles

Grant
Diakite
Molumby
Diangana

Maja

Let's try and make that happen then. Thankfully we have no obligation to buy.

Don't think he is any upgrade on Chalobah. Concerns me that Diakitie is behind him in the pecking order.

Are we missing John Swift from this side? I agree that his form hasn't been that good this season however I went back over the xG generated in our games this season (according to FotMob) and found that out of our 18 games we have generated over 1xG in 10 games and Swift has started 8 of them. Of the 8 games where we did not generate over 1xG, Swift only started two of them (that was against Leeds and Burnley).

Creativity has been a problem and the above shows that Swift has started when generally we have been more successful at being creative.

Since this post we have garnered over 1xG in two games, one of which being today when Swift started. I know he has been off form this season but I see us as better when he is in the side. The key for us is who is competing with him for that role as Diangana has been way off it this season.

We are almost at the halfway point and I though now would be a good time to do a little squad comparison with last season's squad to see if we are any better or worse off. I have only included players that made 10 or more league appearances* in 2023/24. To simplify things, I have attributed a position to each player, even if they play a variety of positions, solely to make the comparison a little easier. In some instances, I have listed a player in a position they don't play but again, it is to make the comparison a little better and they'll be opposite someone who contributed similar in terms of playing time. For each position, players are listed in order of appearances made.

Josh Maja                                                     Devante Cole
Andreas Weimann

My takeaways from the above are:

We are equally as strong in goal, both full back areas and left wing.
We are stronger with our starting centre forward and left back depth.
We are weaker with our starting centre back, starting central midfield and central midfield depth, staring attacking midfield and attacking midfield depth (based on performances not personnel), right wing depth and depth up front.

Some of those takeaways are based on performance, especially in the attacking midfield positions where personnel is mostly the same. Overall however, the recruitment has left us weaker which based on this, makes our position in the league about right.

I'd recall Taylor and expect he will be used; McNair will be gone, Ajayi not fit and Bartley's fitness is hit and miss. He could challenge Holgate on current form and get minutes.

We've matched them up; Furlong and Styles will be the wingbacks with Grant and Fellows joining Maja. There will be some rotation over the next few weeks and with Racic more mobile than Mowatt, that's probably why he is in.

Nice to get the win although the underlying numbers from the game are a concern. Maybe in isolation you can put that down to game state but it was continuing a pattern that we have seen for a while now, namely that we do not create enough chances. I'm not so sure that is going to come with the confidence of a win, more that the win will mask some serious deficiencies.

I am concerned a little by our defence. Styles is a useful player however I'm not sure the fluidity he gives us offensively is worth the fragility at the back. However, I am also unenthusiastic about Holgate at centre back. Who knows, maybe Frabotta will come the fore (unlikley) and play left back with Heggem inside with Bartley but I won't be fully confident with Styles at left back or Holgate at centre back I don't think.

Something that strikes me with our current front four is that we are far nore open in midfield than in previous years and that it really doesn't suit Mowatt that much. I think we have probably seen enough from Racic to see he is behind Molumby and Mowatt but wonder if Diakite is given a run would suit the system better than Mowatt. Having not seen much of Diakite, I'm unsure of his quality but his supposed attributes would suit us potentially.
