I have some sympathy with Mowbray and his team selection.:
Diakite played well midweek but playing in the middle of a three is different to playing in a two where, being the home side, we probably play a little higher up the pitch. That means that Price plays right back; he has been playing fairly well as a right wing-back and with Molumby in front of him playing fairly narrow and us wanting to take the game to Hull, Mowbray likely hoped he'd be operating in similar areas.
Swift in central midfield has proven fruitful in some games and with more balls into the final third than any other player yesterday (he only played 62mins), means he probably did his job. I actually though Molumby from the right played well; he provided bite to support Mowatt and Swift as well as supporting Price. Up top, Grant played well vs Burnley, it would have been harsh to have dropped him plus he probably played his best football of the season up top with Maja, Mowbray isn't crazy for wanting to see if he could get something going with Armstrong.
In the cold light of day, a big man up top with Armstrong, Fellows wide right amongst other selections sound sensible and maybe would have been better but I don't think the team selected is as bad as is being made out. There was some logic behind it.
Overall a frustrating game, we were probably slightly better overall than it felt initislly post-game. Our lack of creativity is such a concern, perhaps Armstrong playing off of a Lankshear or a Dike is something that we need to explore.
Finally, shout out to Bartley and Holgate for two of the stupidest pieces of play I've seen in a while: Bartley's ridiculous shot from 30 yards which went out for a throw and Holgate trying to chest the ball down into the path of Bartley when the ball was in the air for an age, giving Hull the chance where Wildsmith saved one on one. A header up the field would have been fine Mason.
