West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: BCD Cup Final
« on: May 13, 2022, 10:16:51 PM »
Prem team bring their own prem ref and surprise surprise they look better than us.  Hand balls, pull backs, blocking to prevent a challenge on a team mate, obstructions, shirt pulling and dangerous challenges, wrong way throw ins and at least 3 red card offences all in dingles favour.  BUT we won, we scored as many from ordinary play as they did, and more penalties.  So up yours dingles and the same goes for all the armchair purist critics of pretty much everything Albion on here. Well done Albion PL2

it’s not nearly to the degree it’s described, but he’s very much a conservative passer. He wants ball gone quickly (pass and move) but won’t play a stupid pass or try to turn if he feels under pressure.

The movement ahead isn’t great so it’s hard to say if he is lacking in passing range or what, but he doesn’t like holding onto the ball for very long I know that much.

Yes Hunnington, it's not just Molumby or the other WBA players who seem to be averse (even supposing they have the ability) to take on an opponent and get past him. Been watching a bit more than usual tele matches and apart from the top 5 or 6 Prem teams I don't see a lot of players even attempting to dribble; it's all pass and move, and the move is often read and the ball intercepted or the run is blocked off. I remember a time when the blocking of a player without the ball was illegal, but it seems accepted practice now, bit like shirt pulling but not quite so selective referee-wise.

I have a 15 year old great nephew who plays for his local u18 side. His coach was telling the lads father and me that our boy (m.o.m.) is one of the few he has come across in the last couple of years who is able to take on an opponent and use the time to create a chance or start a move. Seems like it's a dying art even at that level.

He had a number of opportunities to pass forward and diagonally on Saturday. He didn't pass back or sideways every time. In a very boring game it just felt like it.

Thank you SmethDan. The lad seems to have the energy, and some of the ability, he is still learning, and may develop the vision, but will need players in the team who are able to make the runs. Perhaps instead of giving em to us paying customers that is.

Seems I really am not missing much these days.

He plays for our club so I wish him well. Time is on his side as others have said. However, I have to jump on the bandwagon about the number of backwards passes that he makes. Very noticeable in the recent games he has played.

Genuine question.  Have not been able to get to any games lately nor even able to watch anything but highlights, but was there ever anything available in a decent forward position for him to pass to on these occasions? Other than a lump up towards Carroll that is.

Just hope the players put the required amount of effort in.

Two Tamworth's and a Gloucester just passing overhead as I write. :)

« on: April 20, 2022, 01:12:25 PM »
Was slightly in favour of Bruce initially, largely influenced by a lack of viable/acceptable options, and the fact that he had taken teams up before. Now after watching the same poor team selections and resulting performances repeated too often, despite clear evidence that TGH improves the midfield whilst others do not, and seeing a relatively sound defensive unit dismantled and turned into a bucket full of holes. Despite the addition of an aged but still effective, hard working, and somewhat inspirational CF in Carroll, there has not been any marked any improved in attacking ability amongst any of the other senior players, so I am now of the firm opinion that we should terminate his contract ASAP.

The replacement of Bruce should also merely represent the tip of the sinking iceberg, and should be followed immediately by the rest of the rotten slush currently residing under the waterline. The only people I would exclude from the cull would be those who have no influence over the playing side, but would include ALL present management, training, physio and medical support staff. None of whom appear to be doing their jobs properly. Also if the legal bunch cannot find a way to clear the decks of the members of the playing staff on long contracts who are deemed non essential by any incoming management, training team then they can also take the same hike.

I sit in the East Stand, bang opposite that incident Frank.

If Robinson had gone for that ball, he would have kicked the keeper in the head & probably have been sent off, as well as causing the keeper a serious injury.

Not saying he doesn't hold back sometimes, but that was not one of them in my opinion.

Saw it from the East stand too, bit behind the incident, and I would agree with you. I did not think he had a real chance but might have got a bit closer in case of a mistake from the keeper. However hanging back a bit might have given him a bit more time to take advantage of a slip. Whichever, although he is not ever going to be a ball winner I am far from certain he was bottling a chance this time and could not understand at first what the BRE was booing for. Might have looked different from behind the goal or from the other side though.

Not surprised with the worst squad this century. Shocking god knows where we go from here

More likely to be down than up.

Maybe for another topic but while I can still think a bit and before the bottom of the Talisker bottle goes clear:

Furlong is not very good but is our best senior option at wing back, (until we see what one of the kids can do anyway) at the moment Reach looks more effective than Townsend on the other side. Neither are good defenders, All need upgrading.

We still need to sort out the spine of what is a pretty spineless bunch, but it is obvious that:

O'Shea, (who is not a wing back) or Kipre are the better options we currently haveat CH. NOT Bartley:
Clarke is doing ok at present would like to sign him and send Mulumby back but it ain't going to happen.
Ajayi doing ok at present, pace an asset, does make defensive errors but so do most defenders. Could be useful further forward at times.
TGH (who should also not be a wing back except in emergency) is the better option in midfield. NOT Mulumby:
Anybody except the guy who doesn't want to be here next season is good enough in goal if they have the merest inkling of an idea of how to dominate their area:
Livermore is doing ok as deep CM: Upgrade would be nice
Carroll is doing okay at CF:(replacement or partner ready for next season hopefully)
Cannot say the same for Mowatt, but he has shown he is capable of better than he is at present. prime candidate for experimental replacement from PL2 side

Diangana, Robinson and Grant are all left sided wide men and should be rotated in that position. Not natural central nor right sided players. Again in a perfect world upgrades required, but going to be difficult to get rid of.

Wish list:
somebody with a football brain and the physique and pace to allow him to use it:

Immediately get rid of what is left of the medical, fitness, training and developmental staff, and the finance and commercial crew, along with owner, and all of the appointments made since he has had the club. Start again with real football people.

We spent 7m on Dike, he shouldn’t need a baby sitter, at this point it’s a competition between them as to who can keep Bupa more occupied.
Carroll may look like he cares but his legs don’t allow him to run, people clamour for strategy and the reduction in average age, then on the back of one match vs Bournemouth want to throw contracts around.

I am in favour of giving him another  12-18 months or so not "on the back of one match" but based on his performances and contributions to the team at both ends of the pitch over most of the games he has played for us. If football was just about being able to run fast then the USA would narrowly win the World Cup over Jamaica simply by picking their best sprinters and relay teams. Thankfully as I think you actually understand, there is usually a little more to it than that, and ability in other aspects is usually far more effective and entertaining than running up and down the pitch very quickly. See a certain mr U Bolt's performances in a soccer team.Great athlete but not a footballer.

I was never a fan. He played for teams I disliked and I have been guilty of giving loads of verbal abuse(and I mean abuse) at times during games. I heard he was a target for us and when he signed I was very very angry. How wrong can you be? Carroll has proven even in his brief time with us that not only is he a consummate professional, but is also a passionate player who cares about the team he is playing for. Normally I would be against a further contract for a 33+ year old, who has only been with us for a relatively short time, but I truly believe Carroll should be signed up if he wants it. He can still be useful on the pitch, and what a mentor and maybe even a strike partner he might be for Dike'. Sign him up Albion!

I think I now understand what the need is for us to play well enough to challenge the top teams in this division. Will those of us who decided not to attend this game; with no doubt perfectly valid reasons, and no criticism is intended, please please just stay away for a season or so. Obviously it is all our fault that the team have been such chite for most of this season. ;D ;D ;D

B71 4LF post code suggests otherwise.

Sorry my friend B71 4LF postcode means zilch, nada sfa. West Bromwich Albion is now, and always has been regarded by all concerned, except perhaps the Landon Media mafia, as a Black Country club. I, just like WBA was born and lived in the Staffordshire part of the Black Country, which makes me a Black Country Staffordshire mon, and WBA a Black Country Staffordshire team. Now though, we both live in the West Midlands. However, neither me nor WBA have moved from our early environs. We may no longer be Staffordshire, but we are still firmly Black Country, and have never ever been Birmingham.

People often ask where the Black Country is. The answer to that question is 'wherever a Black Country mon Edit:Person, says it is and this Black Country Mon sez "West Bromwich Albion ay in Brum - it is in the Black Country'. And that is not a suggestion, sir it is a statement of fact.

Even Steve Bruce knows this, he is a very experienced manager who has in the past had some successes, yet sadly I still am far from thinking he may do better with us than what we have seen so far.  As others have said we need a clear out and a reset but we may fall still further before it happens.

Getting to the play-offs is possible, but not very realistic IMO.  Our mid-season collapse has made it very unlikely.  More to the point, as we stand we are not good enough for the premiership, and I am not convinced that a few good signings would make us so.  We need a season to re-group and put in a real challenge next season.

My thoughts as well Norfolk. Although it might be a bit easier to attract better younger players if we are a premier league outfit, and we DO need some. They (whoever they might be) may well still find us attractive if we seem like a club who look as if we might challenge and have some sort of an idea of how to stay there if we do manage to get promoted.

Let us have a few more games this season with our base levels up to what we did against Fulham, get back the habit and winning mentality, get the support back behind the team and enjoying watching again, and move on to next season with a forward thinking recruitment and playing plan to put us in with a good promotion chance and a future in the prem.

Edit: on the other hand why do I expect us to change the habits of the last 30 years or so?

General Football & Sports / Re: Sam Johnstone
« on: March 18, 2022, 11:54:57 AM »
I think Sam has been overall a very good keeper.  I wonder though if he will be going elsewhere this Summer.  Keepers at this level (just breaking into the England squad), do not attract big money on transfer or massive wages.  I am just not sure who would have the demand for him, unless he sees a future as a bench warmer at the likes of Man City (carson's current fate).  Surely he has to be looking for more than this?  Might be better stopping where he is?

Please no. Your opinion on his ability is equally as valid as mine but I must disagree. It is now best for all parties he moves on. He was offered a contract, he did not sign. We do not get a fee, so where he goes and what he gets is immaterial to WBA. it must be thanks and goodbye Sam good luck wherever you go.

He did exactly what he was paid for.  Had our superb defence (on the night) not been so meticulous with their challenges, and largely kept those Fulham forwards the sky mob were wetting themselves over out of our penalty area, he would have found some excuse to get them a goal. It is just what referees do these days, London Manchester, clubs seem to get treated pretty fairly, Newcastle Liverpool and vile do ok ,the rest of us get punished for what they often get away with. Are the officials bad, bent or just swayed by media pressure? I don't know; but ever since the advent of the premier league I feel that I am seeing what appear to be so many 'fixed' games, Far more than in the old division 1,2,3 and 4 days. VAR is just as bad because it is adjudicated by the same bunch of officials.

Very good performance to night. We beat the top team in the league and despite what will be  said about Fulham 'not being at their best', they were only as good as we let them be. The fact is we were better than them, We are better than them, and we do not get the help from the refs that they get. Had we been them we would have had at least one penalty, and would have been playing against ten men, our opponents having had a player sent off. Just something we have to live with. COYB

Fullum very lucky to be still even. 2 definite penalties refused. 3 decent chances missed and a lot of luck in their own area. in the words of a Fulham comedian from many years ago "You lucky peepull".

Seriously I have not seen anything much to moan about except the lack of instinctive goal scoring ability, and you either have it or you don't, and we don't-unfortunately. But still COYB. crowd doing ok tonight as well-- so far

We're going to need a big game from Mr. Mowatt tonight.

Who am I kidding?

Nobody, we're going to need big games from all of them.

COYB  8) .

The 'support' included! Hope we/they get behind the team, and not just to get on the backs of their usual suspects. Let our voices try and lift our team. As bad as it has been, it's still our club, Owners, players managers are all just transient figures, WE are the ALBION- not them, and in all honesty our (home) performances haven't been that good either, so give it a go and sing em home to a win folks.
The away support is usually trying to let the team know they are there and so is absolved from most of the criticism You have earned the right to moan a bit, just hope the home guys can follow your lead tonight. We can win this COYB  8)

What about taking the players away for pre-season altitude training in the Himalayas, near to the borders with Tibet? If a few managed to get a bit 'lost' I am sure the Chinese authorities would eventually point em in a direction back down ;) ;D

Sam is absolutely quality when he wants to be but he just doesnt want to be here anymore, you dont play internationally if you are a terrible keeper.

I fully expect Josh to be number 1 next season.

I think you do if you are English and only third choice cover in meaningless games.
Agree though that sometimes he does begin to look as if he might be some good, but then every season he has been here he has been directly responsible for errors leading to points lost. It's no good making the great saves, which I will admit he does at times, if the bread and butter is poor. it undoes all the good and leads to complete defensive uncertainty. However I do not think it is deliberate because he wants out, it is just SJ being SJ.
