In the pre bosman world any player who had anything left in his legs would attract a fee regardless of their contract free transfers in the top 2 divisions were a pretty rare. Giles came to us for £75,000 whereas today that would have been a free. That said Giles himself would have probably pocketed the £75,000 so to say "free" is a bit misleading particularly where Kanu is concerned.

Our best value "free" was Kevin Campbell because of his impact during the Great Escape although his impact was pretty short lived.

The great Johnny Nicholls who played alongside Allen in the deady partnership of the mid fifties was signed on a free as an amatuer !

Not many better than him !!
;D He went out with my Mum in the 50's......but she really fancied Ronnie Allen

Ray Tracey left the Albion but Johnny Giles got him back on a free. Don't think he was really our best free signing but he surely did his best and scored some important goals. Like Mulligan they both got picked for Eire during their spell at the Albion.

Check this site out.

I'll throw a curve ball - and not sure he was free, but how about Andy Gray? Gray scored 10 goals for us in 87/88 and basically did a Pete for us - i.e. his goals kept us up.

Other good frees:

Martin Jol
Paul Scharner

I thought Koren did ok in the Prem, but I would rather have Thomas.

i think thomas is overated, Koren was better you only have to touch Jt and he is down, we need a better winger

On what I've seen so far Gareth McCauley hasn't been too bad.
