I don’t have any issue with the deal that was signed. Players and their agents hold all the aces when negotiating a contract extension. If a release clause is required then the player will want the fee set as low as possible. If agreement can’t be reached then the player’s position becomes even stronger as he can simply run his contract down, the same as Sam Johnstone did.
